Hola, outsider. Welcome, child of omens. You come to receive visions of truth?

— White Bird, Honest Hearts

White Bird is a tribal shaman living in The Narrows in Zion Canyon in 2281.

Background[]

White Bird is the shaman of the Sorrows tribe in Zion. Not much is known of him, except that he has an expansive knowledge in tribal medicine and holds a place of authority in the tribe, as new tribe members must go to him to complete their Rite of Passage.[1] As a shaman he presides over the tribes' vision quests,[2] and communes with the spirits, which the tribe believes that guide them.[3]

The Rite of Passage first involves acquiring sacred datura root[4] to make into sacred vision tea.[5][6] Under the effects of this hallucinogenic drink, the Courier is given the quest to lay the Ghost of She to rest, to bring peace where there was strife.[7][8] Although not believing that he is the one to tell the story of Ghost of She to the Courier, but rather Waking Cloud, midwife to the Sorrows.[9] The story of which he declared; that the spirit of the child that was consumed by a Yao guai before her naming day, became one.[10] When the rite is over the prospect brings a Ghost of She's paw and he presents She's Embrace to the Courier.[11]

He is not a very vocal man, and often does not have much to say.[12] White Bird lives in his cave at the Sorrows Camp.

Waking Cloud: "A Sorrow's Yao Guai Fist is a sacred symbol. It shows that we belong to the tribe and have willingly undertaken a dangerous quest to aid the tribe. Each Sorrow makes his own - and only after hunting and slaying a Yao Guai that threatened our people. Our shaman, White Bird, oversees the rites. Perhaps if you spoke to him, he would allow you to undertake such a quest."

White Bird: "Sad story. Not for your ears from my lips. Ask midwife. She speak to your ears."

  10. The Courier: "Tell me about the Ghost of She."
Waking Cloud: "That is a sad story. I do not like to tell it, but if you are asking, it must be at White Bird's request. That, I will honor. Long ago, a girl lived among this tribe. She was a curious child, and a clever one, and her mother had a devil's time watching over her. One day, the child slipped away from camp and went to play in the caves nearby. The girl did not know that a Yao Guai slept in that cave. The girl died. The tribe wept, for the girl had died before her naming day, and her ghost would remain restless and wandering upon the earth. Many hunters tried to kill the beast, but it eluded them, or drove them off. The shaman said that since it had consumed the girl, the two were one. So we call the beast Ghost of She, for the child had no name to be called. That is the story of the Ghost of She. It is a sad story. It is our story."
    (Waking Cloud's dialogue)
  11. The Courier: "It's done."
White Bird: "Then visions of truth are at an end. Will you learn from truth? Maybe yes. Maybe no. Only for you to decide. Here, take. Gift, to remind you of visions. Use well. Or sell to curio trader. Either way, says much about you."
    (White Bird's dialogue)
