The Welcome to Fabulous New Vegas sign is the iconic sign welcoming travelers to New Vegas, located just beyond the southern wall that surrounds the city proper. It is an unmarked location located on the northwestern corner of Camp McCarran.
Background[]
Funded in May 1959, the landmark sign was designed by Betty Willis at the request of Ted Rogich, a local salesman, who sold it to Clark County, Nevada. The sign is located in the median at 5100 Las Vegas Boulevard South and boasts a 25 feet (7.6 m) of height.
After the Great War destroyed the United States and all of its divisions passed into history, the sign became as meaningless as the ruins around it. When the city was reborn in 2274, thanks to the efforts of Robert House, the sign was modified and restored. "Las Vegas" was changed to "New Vegas" and repaired with scavenged parts and pieces. There is a smiley face in the "O" in welcome and the "E" in "New Vegas" is actually a number 3.
Behind the scenes[]
- Although the intro depicts an NCR Ranger veteran sniping a Fiend at the El Rey Motel with an anti-materiel rifle, there is no actual platform to provide support for such a shot, only a series of beams. In the game itself, there's never a Ranger up there. Finally, its real-world inspiration Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign is smaller.
