If the player does not have a high enough lockpick skill, the key to the cabinet can be found inside the crate in the restroom, on the other side of the wall.
After collecting the walkie-talkies, Follows-Chalk will comment periodically about them being more useful than smoke signals.
They are quest items and can only be removed when given to Daniel.
At one point during development, the player was to find the walkie-talkies broken, just like the Broken compass, and had to get it repaired. This part of the quest was cut before release, however; with the only remaining assets being a single icon for a broken walkie-talkie and two messages within the GECK telling the player that the walkie-talkie is broken and can be repaired with a Repair of 30 or 1 pile of Scrap electronics.
