Word is that the Legion's old timers have shown up, Caesar's veterans from the Red Okie Centuria and what was the Painted Rock tribe. They're the best of the best and the baddest of the bad. Short of a centurion or praetorian, they don't come any tougher.

— Chief Hanlon

Veteran legionaries are the elite of Caesar's Legion in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Veteran legionaries are the oldest and the most experienced warriors at Caesar's disposal. Hailing from some of the oldest territories and tribes conquered by Caesar, such as Painted Rock, the veterans represent the pinnacle of martial prowess and resilience in Caesar's service, short of centurions and his praetorian guards.[1] Their age is the key to their impressive performance. Many have served Caesar for over a decade, making up for whatever they lost to age with accumulated combat experience.[2] Veterans are numerous enough for entire centurias (80 warriors) to be formed, such as the Red Okie Centuria.[1]

Characteristics[]

In terms of inspiration, Caesar is evidently drawing on imperial Triarii, who were the most experienced and best equipped soldiers of the Roman legions, coming into action last, frequently providing the final push needed to overcome the enemy. In gameplay terms, veterans are identical to prime legionaries, but have improved Legion veteran armor with better protection and come equipped with higher grade weapons.

  2. The Courier: "What makes the veterans so tough?"
Hanlon: "Take a regular legionary and age him ten years. Whatever they lose to age they make up for with experience. Life expectancy isn't long in the Legion. You live ten years in Caesar's army, you're a force to be reckoned with."
