The Vault jumpsuit is a piece of apparel in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Main article: Vault jumpsuit

A rugged jumpsuit variant designed for heavy use among Vault-Tec machinery and infrastructure. Rather than extruded rubber, the suit uses a combination of denim - a quintessentially American material - and natural leather,[1][2][3] combined to create a particularly rugged piece of equipment. The suit is less form fitting than other jumpsuit variants, but provides a good deal of comfort. Like other versions, it's a single-piece uniform, with a zipper down the front, leather armguards, and spacious pockets on the waist and thighs. Reinforced elbows and knees give it extra durability under heavy use, with the interface port over the left breast used for a variety of purposes. Depending on the job assignment, the jumpsuit is designed to accommodate a variety of belts, including simple leather bands for children, rugged multi-purpose belts for general use, and specialized equipment for utility, lab, and security work.[4][5]

Characteristics[]

Every Vault featured in Fallout 3 has a matching jumpsuit, nearly all of which are available in the game (the exception are the jumpsuits for Vaults 87 and 92, as these are not available anywhere in the game). They all provide a single point of damage resistance and +2 to Speech and Melee Weapons, and can be repaired with spare copies of other jumpsuits. A number of modified variants are found in the game, and a single unique jumpsuit, the Vault 77 jumpsuit, referencing the Penny Arcade Comic.

Although it offers little in the way of protection, a Vault jumpsuit modifies character reactions when worn (only if it's a regular variant). Characters will generally recognize the player as a Vault dweller, most noticeable in Megaton when talking with Lucas Simms, Billy Creel, Jericho, and Leo Stahl, among others.

The various jumpsuit versions include:

  • The unique Vault 77 jumpsuit
  • Vault 87 jumpsuits, not placed anywhere in the game and not accessible without mods or console commands. Fawkes wears a faded, gray version of the jumpsuit, torn by his bulk.
  • Vault 92 jumpsuits, again, not placed anywhere in the game and not accessible without mods or console commands.
  • Vault 101 jumpsuits, available from the start of the game (Child's Vault 101 jumpsuit is used during character generation).
  • Vault 106 jumpsuits, worn by the insane survivors populating it.
  • Vault 108 jumpsuits, based on the unique utility suit used by James, and worn by Garys.
  • Vault 112 jumpsuits, issued by robobrains at the Vault.

Special variants include:

Locations[]

Vault 77
  • Paradise Falls: It can be obtained from a shelf in the slaver barracks.
Vault 101
Vault 106
Vault 108
  • Vault 108: Looted from the cloned Garys. The one found on Gary 23 during Operation: Anchorage cannot be looted.
Vault 112
  • Vault 112: Received from the robobrain stewards. An infinite number of them can be obtained by dropping any suit held in inventory and interacting with them again. Another two are found in the clinic, on the shelves. They are invisible due to a graphics glitch, but can be picked up as normal and appear when jumping up.

Sarah Weintraub: "Okay, I do, but who wants a lame sensor module, or a nitrogen canister, anyway? All the popular stuff has been sold - especially the vault suits. I need to find more because people buy them like hot cakes."

  5. Conceptual Design: "The Vault Suit
Designing, or redesigning the vault suit meant adhering to canon, and updating the textures and tactile feel for the detail we can achieve now in games. I opted for a more durable denim like material, something quintessentially American and, suited to carrying out vault tasks involving heavy machinery and crawling through metal pipes.
Overall, the vault suit seems to represent an Everyman/Everywoman uniform of conformity, and a blank canvas for accessorizing once the wearer had escaped into the harsh environment of the wasteland. Preserving the retro 50’s flavor seemed to support this, and I wanted the suit to feel at home in a classic 50’s sci-fi film like Forbidden Planet. The reinforced elbows and knees seemed to introduce a bit of that flair to the otherwise oppressively Orwellian environment."
