This Vault-Tec representative is an experienced salesman representing the Vault-Tec Corporation in the Greater Boston area in 2077. Surviving the Great War, depressed, alone, and now a ghoul, he has made his dwelling in the Hotel Rexford in 2287.

Background[]

A twenty year sales veteran for the Vault-Tec Corporation,[1] the salesman went door to door finalizing paperwork on residents pre-approved for entrance into Vault 111 on Saturday morning, October 23, 2077. Not long after the sirens, just as Nate, Nora, and Shaun make it to the gate, he was arguing with an officer, demanding that he be let in as a member of Vault-Tec. After threatening to run past them anyway, a power armored soldier revs his minigun, which frightens him into backing off. As he runs away, he then threatened to report what happened.

Luckily, or unluckily, the Vault-Tec rep survived the Great War. When he awoke he was greeted by Codsworth, trimming the hedges like nothing had happened. He stayed there for over a year, alone and with only Codsworth's personality to keep him company. Unable to take the monotony of it any longer he left, never to return.[2][3]

He eventually made his way to Diamond City, but with the Anti-ghoul decree of 2282 baring him from town[4] and no other settlements wanting a ghoul salesman, he wandered[5] into Goodneighbor and took residence in the Hotel Rexford. That is, until the day he and the Sole Survivor met again in the hallway outside his room. It is here the Sole Survivor can talk him out of his funk and recruit him to a settlement as a merchant. Although still depressed he will welcome the chance to finally be productive and be among friends.[6][7][8]

Although he was aware that time was precious[9] in late 2077 he managed his nervousness through his work. Once a confident and friendly man he has become depressed, bitter,[10][11] angry, and alone.[12] He spends virtually every waking moment bemoaning his fate as a lonely monster,[13] living through the filth, decay, and the bloodshed, abandoned by the corporation he faithfully served.[1][14] It was his obsession with the past and how he believed that he deserved better that kept him in this eternal funk.[15][16] Of particular note was with the contest he was to win, a pack of steak knives being the prize.[17]

He truly believed that Vault-Tec was working for a better future, and continues to be proud of his twenty year sales career with them. Despite the two centuries since the Great War, his obsessive bitter depression has limited his interaction with others,[15][16] evident by the fact that he is honestly and completely unaware of their true nature.[1][17]

Other interactions[]

  • Once encountered at Hotel Rexford, the representative can be convinced to join the player's settlement at Sanctuary Hills as an expert trader, with a moderate dialogue challenge. Once at Sanctuary Hills, he can be moved to any other settlement using the Move command. When assigned to an emporium, he sells a broad variety of items, including the unique Apocalypse left greave.
  • Unfortunately he has a long dialogue line about "the two of us, here in Sanctuary" that he repeats every time the player comes near, including when he is assigned to a store. Unlike most NPCs, his dialogue cannot be skipped (by clicking), and the trade interface will not open until he finishes.
  • If one is sarcastic about staying unchanged for two hundred years and the player has Codsworth in their party the line spoken will not include his experience with Codsworth.

The Sole Survivor: "Wait. Are you from Vault-Tec?"
Vault-Tec rep: "I AM Vault-Tec! Twenty years of loyal service and now look at me. I wasn't on the list. But you. Look at you. Two hundred years and you're still perfect! How? How's that possible?"
The Sole Survivor: "You don't know? They didn't tell you?"
Vault-Tec rep: "Tell me what? What is it? How did you get through the last 200 years untouched?"
The Sole Survivor: "The Vault had these pods that froze us in place. I only thawed out recently."
Vault-Tec rep: "What? Vault-Tec never told me that! Unbelieveable! Well, I had to get to the future the hard way. Living through the... filth! The.. decay! And the bloodshed! Look at me! I'm a Ghoul! A freak!"
    (Vault-Tec rep's dialogue)
  2. The Sole Survivor: "Well, you kill enough people, sooner or later something's bound to make you immortal."
Vault-Tec rep: "Oh... oh that's rich... Real funny. Just like that robot of yours. After the bombs fells, and I came to, that bucket of bolts was still there! Trimming those fucking hedges like nothing had happened."
The Sole Survivor: "You met Codsworth? What did he say?"
Vault-Tec rep: ""Welcome to our happy home, sir. Can I get you a drink? Cheerio!" Just like that, over and over again. He was the only one still alive that I could talk to. A year went by before I couldn't take it anymore!"
    (Vault-Tec rep's dialogue)
  3. The Sole Survivor: "Hey, you know you could head back to Sanctuary. I'll come visit. I promise."
Vault-Tec rep: "Yeah, right. You'll ditch me there, and then it's me and that crazy robot of yours talking about those fucking hedges again for a year. No... just... just leave me alone."
    (Vault-Tec rep's dialogue)
  4. The Sole Survivor: "Where else could you go?"
Vault-Tec rep: "Diamond City bigots don't allow Ghouls inside. It's just here or back at Sanctuary talking to that crazy robot of yours."
    (Vault-Tec rep's dialogue)
  5. Vault-Tec rep: "You have no idea what it's been like scrounging around for two centuries with this ugly mug..."
(Vault-Tec rep's dialogue) Note: This line is spoken when visiting him after you've rejected him.
  6. The Sole Survivor: "Hey, you know you could head back to Sanctuary. I'll come visit. I promise."

  13. The Sole Survivor: "You're a Ghoul? What's a Ghoul?"
Vault-Tec rep: "Radiation Surplus Mart that's what a Ghoul is! You think I'd be able to live this long on my own? The Rads did this to me."
The Sole Survivor: "Are there any other Ghouls out there? From before?"
Vault-Tec rep: "You mean crazy Kent and "nothing bothers me" Daisy? Yeah, there's a couple of us. But no one from the neighborhood. No one from Vault-Tec. They just... left me there..."
The Sole Survivor: "Yeah, Codsworth has a few... personality quirks."
Vault-Tec rep: "You know... you're the only other person I met from... before. I... uh... I... Oh god... I've been so alone here! No Commonwealth settlement wants a Ghoul with 200 years of Vault-Tec sales experience!"

    (Vault-Tec rep's dialogue)
