The NCR Ranger combat armor, colloquially known as the Black Armor, is the iconic armor worn by NCR Ranger Veterans. Originally military-grade armor used by Los Angeles Police Department riot squads, this combat outfit is typically worn with a matching military helmet with built-in low light optics, a dual infrared and LED light, and respirator. It is traditionally worn with the Desert Rangers style duster and a set of rodeo jeans. The Black Armor strikes fear into any enemy of the New California Republic as they stare down the barrel of a Ranger Sequoia.
Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is a spin-off of the Fallout series released in 2004 by Interplay Entertainment. The game revolves around an Initiate of the Brotherhood of Steel journeying through the Texas Commonwealth in search of missing Brotherhood paladins, but soon discovers a splinter of Unity led by once super mutant commander Attis and must destroy the mutant menace. Attis is defeated and the Initiate narrowly escapes death as they ride a monorail out of the self destructing Secret Vault of which Attis has taken command. Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel is not considered part of the official Fallout canon because of numerous inconsistencies with previous Fallout games.
Vault 22 is one of the vault series of fallout shelters developed by Vault-Tec Corporation. Nestled in a cliffside in the Mojave Wasteland, V22's main focus was advancing agricultural technology to prepare for when the vault reopened. Ultimately, the growing of genetically altered spores led to the mutation of the vault dwellers as well as the growth of dense vegetation. While many of the inhabitants became spore carriers, over 100 escaped the jungle of a vault and made their way to Zion Canyon, eventually leaving the canyon in early 2096 after only a fraction of their numbers remained. The vault lay dormant for years, until the NCR's Dr. Thomas Hildern took an interest, hoping to further the OSI's research in agricultural growth and secure himself a promotion.
The United States of America was one of the few nations in the world whose economy survived long enough to participate in the Great War that destroyed civilization. In just over 300 years, the United States evolved from a collection of 13 English colonies to a major world and nuclear power comprised of 13 commonwealths by the time of the Great War. While a fraction of the population sought refuge in vaults, the "important people" were often members of and were protected by the Enclave, a group formed by the éminence grise members of the federal government and military industrial complex that continued to hold influence long after the ash of America had settled. Not long after the world erupted into atomic fire, the survivors of the Old World would slowly rebuild the United States, even if it took centuries or millennia to return it to its former glory.
Vault 101 is one of the vault series of fallout shelters developed by Vault-Tec Industries. Located in the central Capital Wasteland, V101 was an experiment focused around prolonged isolation and the effects of an omnipotent and omnipresent overseer. For over 150 years of isolation, the vault remained closed until the overseer sent out scouting parties to study the outside world and determine if it was safe to permanently open the vault. The progressive overseer disappeared on a similar excursion thereafter; foul play was suspected, but Alphonse Almodovar succeeded him as overseer nonetheless and brought the vault back into traditional isolation. Within the Vault, life was stifled by brainwashing and Almodovar's firm grip on the community. It was safe, but no place to truly live. James, the Vault physician taken in from the wasteland, abandoned the shelter and their child to again pursue his dream, Project Purity. His child, the Lone Wanderer, would escape from the vault too in search of their runaway father.
Necropolis, a town built upon the charred remains of Bakersfield, California, is the grim aftermath of Vault 12; it is best described by Killian Darkwater: "The climate ain't good, rain or shine." The true purpose of that V12 was to keep the doors open regardless of the conditions, which spelled disaster to anyone attempting to seek relief from the irradiated aftermath of the Great War. Accordingly, the residents of vault suffered a slow transformation into ghouls. To most of post-War California's residents, Necropolis was a haunted city, at times a myth used to frighten children: a "city of cannibals" inhabited by brain-eating ghouls. In March of 2162, Unity swept through Necropolis, killing the ghoul inhabitants that did not flee from the invading super mutants.
Powder Gangers are a gang of escaped convicts that routinely raid small caravans in the Mojave Wasteland. Based in the New California Republic Correctional Facility, Powder Gangers were used as prison labor by the New California Republic to build railroads to foster the republic's expansion. The Powder Gangers rose up in 2281 and took the prison by force, being led by Samuel Cooke. Cooke would later leave the prison and put Eddie in charge. The prisoners used to use dynamite to break up rock to make way for the railway, but now they mainly use it to conduct raids. They use conventional small arms too, but Powder Gangers prefer to do things with a bang.
Vault City is a high-tech settlement in West Nevada, established by the inhabitants of Vault 8 after the Great War. The Vault opened in 2091 after receiving the all-clear signal that was secretly from the Enclave. The city was built around the vault, using its fusion generator as a power source and knowledge contained in the G.E.C.K. to establish the first structures.
First Citizen Lynette runs Vault City with cold hands and an iron grip. The city is bureaucratic, sleek and antiseptic, with a lot of technology, rules, regulations and guards. The population is antipathic to all outsiders, and pro-slavers in policy, although they prefer the term "servants". They claim that it is legitimate because they give the servants shelter, food and protection, but people like Thomas Moore object to this heavily, and call it hypocrisy since they frown at those who openly call it slaves and do slaving (The Den, for instance). They won't share their technology with the outside world, either, because they view at everyone else as "thieves and baggarts" of the wasteland.
Washington, D.C. was once the capital city of the United States of America. The devastation brought by the Great War reduced the city to a sea of irradiated ruins, christening it and the surrounding area as the Capital Wasteland. Even two centuries after the war, it remains a lawless, violent expanse.
Built on the banks of the Potomac River, the District of Colombia has many distinct landmarks that have weathered the centuries. Since the war, the city has become overrun with super mutants, especially on the Capital Mall and its various surrounding neighborhoods. For this reason, very few wastelanders live or establish settlements in the city. Transportation throughout the city and its neighborhoods is facilitated by an underground Metro system, but these tunnels are often as dangerous as the city above.
Freeside is a neighborhood in New Vegas. What it lacks in the glitz and glamour of the adjacent New Vegas Strip, it makes up for in thugs, chem addicts and squatters. The slum is controlled by The Kings, a gang of Elvis Presley impersonators, who are trying to keep Freeside an independent community but is under threat from the New California Republic who enable squatters to loiter and trespass in the neighborhood. The shady Van Graff family also holds influence in Freeside, selling flashy energy weapons out of the Silver Rush to anyone with the caps. The Followers of the Apocalypse operate out of the Old Mormon Fort within the slum and offer low-cost medical help to Freesiders, but their supplies are stretched thin by the demanding neighborhood. In short, the entire neighborhood is a hotbed for political and economic turmoil, but no one can seem to bring reform.
Craig Boone is an ex-sharpshooter from 1st Reconnaissance Battalion that left the New California Republic Army with a bitter attitude. He now acts as the night sentry for the town of Novac, often only seen with his rifle sticking out the dinosaur's mouth. His wife, Carla, disappeared shortly after they came to Novac, leaving him without a friend in town. Should Boone leave Novac to wander the Mojave with the Courier, he will take steps to come to grips with the loss of his wife and the role he played in the Bitter Springs Massacre, which he has kept secret for too long. He is still an NCR soldier at heart, but coupled with the psychological trauma of his army days, he has become suicidal; he has no goal, purpose, or desire in life but to slaughter legionnaires until Caesar's Legion finally catches up to him.
Radiation is the prime manifestation of a nuclear explosion. Much of the pre-War world revolved around the use of radiation. From fission cars to using radiation in soft drinks, most of the world was comfortable with the persistent effects of radiation in their daily lives. After the Great War of 2077, the entire world was engulfed in nuclear fallout. The resulting radiation caused a vast array of mutations among surviving organisms, which became a permanent feature to the wasteland. Monitoring and coping with radiation has become a regular aspect of daily life but luckily there are only a few major hot zones in the wasteland while much of it is still habitable. If one absolutely has to venture into one of these hot zones, bringing Rad-X and RadAway would be a wise decision.
The Lone Wanderer is the player character in Fallout 3. Supposedly born in Vault 101, the Lone Wanderer leaves in search of their father that escaped the vault to continue Project Purity, a humanitarian effort he started before seeking refuge in the vault. After journeying to Megaton, the D.C. Ruins, and Rivet City, they are reunited with their father in Vault 112. While aiding their father in Project Purity, the Enclave appear and commandeer the project. The Lone Wanderer joins forces with the Brotherhood of Steel to retake control of the project, avenge their father's death and eliminate the Enclave's influence from the Capital Wasteland and its surround regions. In addition to eliminating the Enclave, the Lone Wanderer aids the Brotherhood Outcasts in acquiring pre-War technology, determines the fate of The Pitt, mediates a feud between pre-War powers in the Point Lookout and saves the Earth from aliens that mean to experiment upon its entire population.
Leonard Boyarsky is one of the original masterminds behind the Fallout world and the first Fallout game. After receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Art Center College of Design, he began work as a freelance artist in 1992. Some time later he was hired as a cleanup artist at Interplay Entertainment. He later became the lead artist/art director on the GURPS project that became Fallout. Aside from guiding the art on the project, together with Jason Anderson, Tim Cain, Scott Campbell and Chris Taylor, he oversaw the direction and feel of the game. He left Interplay after helping to complete the initial design for Fallout 2 and, together with Cain and Anderson, founded Troika Games.
Limited Edition Mojave Landmark Snow Globes are collectible baubles found throughout the Mojave Wasteland. There are a total of seven of the snow globes across the Mojave and four more can be found in the areas surrounding it. From Featuring Vault Boy, it is safe to assume that these snow globes were promotional items from Vault-Tec Industries. Rumor has it that these collectibles are highly prized by an influential collector somewhere in the Mojave and will pay a substantial fee for each trinket he receives.
Toccamatta is one of the gifted and clever super mutants in Gammorin's Army. As such, he has been promoted to the rank of High Inquisitor and is Gammorin's right hand. He specializes in torture and has a ninety-nine percent success rate at getting prisoners to spill the beans. His squad took General Barnaky prisoner in St. Louis and was carrying him to Gammorin when they were ambushed by robots. When a Brotherhood of Steel squad reaches Osceolla, he is dying and with his last breath, another piece of the puzzle falls into place.
The Fallout world is not quite our own; somewhere around 1945, it diverged with our history. It's still recognizably our world, but with some changes. Along with being historically divergent, the Fallout world is also fundamentally different in terms of how science works. The base concept for the setting is 1950s World of Tomorrow after the bomb. This means that before the war, the Fallout world was more or less what the people of the 1950s thought things would be like in 2077.
The single most important event in the Fallout setting was the Great War which began and ended on October 23, 2077. It lasted a very brief amount of time, but was unbelievably destructive. More energy was released in the early moments of the war than all previous conflicts combined. The world lie dormant for a time, but humans would quickly adapt to their irradiated and mutating surroundings and begin rebuilding a new world.
Adams Air Force Base is a heavily fortified Enclave installation in Maryland. After Raven Rock was destroyed in 2277, the air force base became the Enclave's main base of operations on the Eastern Seaboard. Connected via an underground line to the Capitol and the White House, it provided transportation for the highest offices of the nation. It wasn't until the late 2200s that the Enclave claimed the base, using what remained to establish operations around their mobile base crawler. The Enclave started several research projects at the base, including the development of a Duraframe Eyebot and Hellfire power armor. The Lone Wanderer was sent to the base by the Brotherhood of Steel with orders to destroy the facility.
Old World Blues is the third add-on for Fallout: New Vegas. In this add-on, the Courier is drawn to a drive-in movie theater by a mysterious broadcast and are unwittingly transported to the Big Empty, a pre-War technological graveyard. After a science experiment gone horribly wrong, the Courier must help the Think Tank, a bizarre group of brain bots, to save them from their own experiments - experiments that have transcended beyond their control. Exploring Big MT sheds light on dozens of technological wonders and horrors that might have been and by acquiring these advanced technology, the Courier, and only the Courier, can save all of Science!
Jesse Heinig worked as a programmer and designer on the original Fallout. Among other things, he was responsible for scripting and designing the companions, including Ian and Tycho. Originally, the engine they used for Fallout didn't really support party members and they weren't in the original game design. He was also one of the people responsible for creating the SPECIAL character system, along with Chris Taylor and Tim Cain. Outside of Fallout, Heinig went on to work on and help develop other role-playing game projects after his brief stint of employment at Interplay Entertainment.
The Anchorage Reclamation simulation is a virtual reality simulation of the Anchorage Reclamation of 2066 to 2077. The simulation was developed by Virtual Strategic Solutions, Inc. under the supervision of General Constantine Chase to prepare soldiers on what to expect when they were sent to the Anchorage Front Line. The simulation is allegedly more hardcore and, at points, completely fictitious according to VSS technicians. The simulation is divided into two sections: the artillery battery and and the main battlefield. The artillery battery is a kind of training exercise, while the main battlefield is the real deal. Heavy front line combat is omnipresent and safety protocols are disengaged: sim death, real death.
Cheyenne Mountain was the site of a United States military facility known as the North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD. The facility was the principal aerospace and strategic defense command center for the North American continent. Conceived as a joint defense venture between the United States and Canada, NORAD protected the citizens of both countries through the darkest days of the Cold War. By 2241, NORAD is offline. Cheyenne Mountain also houses Vault 0, where the Calculator has bided its time and amassed a substantial robot army. The "Menace of the West" is rumored to be plotting the extermination of mankind.
Richard Grey (né Moreau), ominously known as the Master, is the brain behind Unity which roams California during the mid-2200s and is worshiped as a god by the Children of the Cathedral. As a human, he settled in the Hub in 2092 after being exiled from Vault City on charges of murder. On June 23, 2102, Grey and an expedition party stumbled upon the Mariposa Military Base, an Forced Evolutionary Virus research facility. Grey survived the mutated creatures and automated defense systems inside only to be knocked into a vat of F.E.V, where he would remain for almost an entire month. He emerged as what would eventually become known as the Master, a hideous mutant composed of several other creatures and electronic parts with intense psionic abilities to boot. In order to stop the super mutant threat, the Master would be confronted and defeated in the Los Angeles Vault by the Vault Dweller.
Zion Canyon is what remains of Zion Nation Park in Utah. Zion was not directly hit by the bombs of the Great War, leaving it as largely unspoiled wilderness. As opposed to the Mojave Desert, Zion Canyon is very much alive. The Virgin River has carved up the landscape and many caves perforate the canyon. Wildlife – some friendly and some dangerously mutated – flourishes in the coniferous and deciduous forests of Zion.
The canyon is home to three tribes: the Dead Horses, the Sorrows and the White Legs. The latter tribe has recently gone to war against the two former tribes, seeking a place in Caesar's Legion. Each tribe inhabits their corner of the canyon; the Dead Horses, Sorrows and White Legs can be found in the Eastern Virgin, The Narrows and Three Mary's, respectively. The leader of the Sorrows, Daniel, encourages the Sorrows to evacuate from the canyon to escape the White Legs, but the Dead Horses war chief, Joshua Graham, insists on taking the fight to the White Legs instead.
10mm pistols are firearms that are very common in the wasteland. Several models of .40 caliber pistols survived the Great War, such as Colt 6520's, U.S. military N99's, and Chinese Shanxi Type 17's. All these pistols survived because of their reliability and durability, and eventually found their way into the hands of any wastelander that could find one. The search was not hard; they were used extensively by the Bureau of Alcohol, Drugs, Tobacco, Firearms and Lasers, not to mention in private homes across the country. In the military these conventional pistols were being phased out in favor of energy weapons, but were still often kept on base should the need for them arise.
Junction City is a midsized town in Kansas that refuses to form an alliance with the Brotherhood of Steel. Their independent posture is reinforced by their victory over one of the Calculator's humanoid robots. Brotherhood Elders are quite curious how such a battle could be won, considering the lack of heavy weaponry involved and sent a squad to investigate it, retrieve robotic parts from the scene of the battle and to recruit a mechanic from Junction City to the Brotherhood.
The city is ruled by mayor John Levis, and other notable citizens are his assistant, the bartender Angry Rick, trader Juan, Hank and his wife, Martha Dilbert, the mechanic Casey Barrett along with her father, Stephen Barrett, and Chuck. The town is guarded by its own military force, called "enforcers".
Fallout: New Vegas is the fourth main game in the Fallout series, released in 2010 by Obsidian Entertainment and Bethesda Softworks. The game involves the Courier, a package envoy, who is ambushed by a smooth man in a checkered coat, who leaves them for dead in a shallow grave and takes their mysterious package. The Courier must then track down the man who shot them and take back the package, but the stakes become high as the Courier begins to play an instrumental role in sculpting New Vegas and the surrounding Mojave Wasteland by influencing the factions vying for control of the area. The game features four story add-ons that continue the Courier's story beyond the Mojave.
The Mordinos were once the most powerful crime family in New Reno. At first, the Mordinos exploited tourists with hallucinogenic peyote cacti for the "Reno Experience". The family quickly gained an edge in the form of an obnoxious, albeit brilliant boy scientist name Myron. Myron is responsible for creating and refining jet. The highly addictive chem became their bread and butter, greatly expanding their influence in New Reno in response to the waves of jet addicts that flooded into the city. The Mordinos fell from power once Myron died from a stabbing in the Den and a cure to jet addiction was discovered in Vault City. The family's assets would slowly be absorbed into the other families of New Reno until the name "Mordino" was soon forgotten.
New Vegas is a city in the Mojave Wasteland that was built upon the ruins of Las Vegas, Nevada. New Vegas came out the Great War mostly unscathed, thanks to defense systems developed by multibillionaire Robert House. House rules over New Vegas from the Lucky 38 Casino, a place no one has gone into or come out of in centuries. The main attraction of the city is the New Vegas Strip, which contains multiple entertainment venues, casinos, and hotels. However, outside of the Strip is an entirely different story. Freeside, a neighborhood directly adjacent to the Strip, is filled with lowlifes, chem abusers and hustlers. Westside is a residential neighborhood that is mostly self-sufficient, but still suffers from poverty among its residents. House shows little concern to these surrounding areas, as he is more interested in his plans to rule New Vegas and soon spread his influence beyond the small, yet economically invaluable city.
Mariposa super mutants are mutated humans that have been exposed to the strain of Forced Evolutionary Virus kept in Mariposa Military Base. These mutations caused them to grow substantially larger than humans and develop more muscle, which accounts for 75% of their body mass. These super mutants were created by Richard Grey (a.k.a. the Master) to build the Unity, an army of super mutants that the Master planned would ultimately inherit the world. The less irradiated a human was when they were exposed to the F.E.V., the more successful a super mutant was in terms of strength and intelligence. After the defeat of the Master at the hands of the Vault Dweller in 2162, the Master's armies generally fled east from California where they would resettle in isolated, and often times irradiated areas to avoid contact with unmutated humans. The Enclave would continue the Master's experiment in the 2200s and would create the second generation of super mutants after much experimentation
Swampfolk are mutated humans that wander the backwoods of Point Lookout. Along with the ambient radiation of the region, inbreeding has contributed to their noticeable deformities. Left in isolation in these backwater parts, swampfolk look, walk, talk, and act like stereotypical yokels. These hicks are very territorial and are hostile to anyone who is not native to Point Lookout. They have a rudimentary and occult belief system, and mark their territory (which is everywhere north and west of Point Lookout Township) with fetishes: straw dolls hanging from trees and bone totems. They typically protect this territory with whatever weapons they have available, be it axes, baseball bats or conventional firearms, like lever-action rifles and double-barrel shotguns.
