Working here is like a slog through the mud. It's tough going and you're get dirty doing it, but at the end of the day, it's worth it.

The Slog is a location and possible settlement in the Commonwealth.

Once the Middlesex Country public swimming pool, The Slog is the best (and only) tarberry bog in the Commonwealth. The name "The Slog" only came about recently after a heavy rainstorm and a trader had to "slog" through all the mud to get a shipment of tarberries, but it was worth it.[1] Even more unique, the settlement is run entirely by ghouls, who formed it after Mayor McDonough exiled them from Diamond City.[2][3] The way Wiseman sees it, if this place could be more than simply a refuge for outcast ghouls and seen as an example of what can be achieved when a collective put their minds to something and cooperate, maybe the stereotypes about ghouls being monsters might fade.[3]

Settlement information

The settlement area is rather large, encompassing the shower house, the tarberry bog, and some lands surrounding. There is a decent amount of scrap lying around for wood and steel, but the shower house is completely intact an provides ample shelter anyway. In addition to the tarberry bog, there is also plenty of arable land for other crops and water pumps. A meager chainlink fence provides some defense against raids, but considering how dangerous the region is, the Slog is likely to encounter its fair share of attacks.

In front of the swimming pool that serves as a tarberry bog, the shower rooms serves as the bunkhouse. There is an auxiliary farm next to the tarberry bog and the settlement comes pre-equipped with an armor workbench and cooking station.

Notable loot

The Slog appears only in Fallout 4.

  1. Wiseman: Welcome to the Slog! We're the only tarberry bog in the Commonwealth. So what do you think of the place?"
The Sole Survivor: "The Slog? How'd you come up with that name?"
Wiseman: "We didn't. It was the caravan traders who started that. I started this place a few years back but couldn't think of a name for it. Th, one day, one of the traders pulls up after it's been raining for hours, and says he's never had to slog through so much mud in his life. I asked him if was worth it, and he said for the best tarberries in the Commonwealth, it was definitely worth it. Working here is like a slog through the mud. It's tough going and you're get dirty doing it, but at the end of the day, it's worth it."

  2. Fallout 4 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide Collector's Edition p.282-283: "[2.18] THE SLOG
The Middlesex County public swimming pool is now the only Tarberry Bog in the Commonwealth. Run by Ghoul settlers, they could provide much-needed trading goods to an enterprising (and open-minded) Minuteman. There’s a small diner on the property to scavenge too (Advanced)."

  3. 3.0 3.1 Wiseman: "You probably noticed its only ghouls around here. I used to live in Diamond City. I decided that we ghouls should have a place where we could feel welcome, and that's mainly why I started up this farm."
The Sole Survivor: "Why did the mayor throw you out?"
Wiseman: "We're ugly, we turn feral and kill people, we gives the kids nightmares, all the usual stuff we get from your smoothskins. Now it's true there was one incident in Diamond City where a ghoul turned feral and someone got hurt. But I ask you this - how many humans have suddenly turned violent and killed someone? I've seen it more times than I care to admit. What if this place could be more than just a refuge for ghouls who aren't welcome elsewhere? What if it could also be an example of what we could do when we put our minds to something and work together? We want this to be a place that everyone looks forward to visiting, with smiling faces, good bargains, and great produce. Maybe we could take a second look, you know? Maybe then they'd see we're not monsters."
