The Gainer is a unique .44 pistol that can be found and obtained within the Commonwealth, in Fallout 4.

Background[]

The following section is transcluded from .44 Magnum revolver. To modify, please edit the source page.

The Smith & Wesson Model 29 is a six-shot, double-action revolver chambered for the .44 Magnum cartridge, manufactured since 1955. This large frame revolver offers excellent accuracy, firepower, and reliability. Multiple models remain available and quite popular in the wastelands, from the shortened 4 1/2 inch variant to the full size, high end monsters with scopes.[1] By default, the revolvers come with tritium illuminated sights.[2]

Characteristics[]

While The Gainer does not have that much greater of a ballistic advantage over the standard .44 pistol, The Gainer has the ability to set targets on fire for an extra 15 points of damage over a short period of time.

Location[]

  • This unique .44 pistol can be obtained at the Vitale pumphouse, which is an unmarked location just south of the Hub City Auto Wreckers. The pumphouse is protected by a code-locked door, in which the code can be seen written on the wall (10, 4, 5, 1).

Behind the scenes[]

So part 1 is the most obvious. I set up a simple door puzzle, and built/scripted a little four-digit input toy. The code is hidden in the room nearby, but immersive sim fans won't need it. 0451 is a nod to System Shock that also appears in Thief, Deus Ex, Dishonored...

Part 2 is a quiet high-five to a dev friend. @fullbright has often proclaimed his love for a nasty-ass video game magnum, so I hid a custom one here. Steve's a bit too well-known to drop his name directly, so I called the gun "The Gainer". Just subtle enough?

Part 3 is the one I don't think many people got. The body staging here is a reference to the classic @HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN game, SNATCHER. I put a similar reference in Fallout 3 (with a few extra clues which made it more obvious)

  • The Gainer, the method of obtaining it, and the scene arrangement are a complex, multi-layered cake of references set up by Joel Burgess.[3]
    • The code is a triple entendre, referencing Looking Glass Studios and their door code, various games made by/inspired by/related to/referencing their titles (System Shock, Deus Ex, Thief, Dishonored, Bioshock, and on...), and Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. 451 in Fahrenheit is the ignition temperature for paper.[3]
    • The Magnum is a nod to Steve Gaynor, who loves "nasty-ass video game magnum[s]".
    • The way the body is staged is a reference to Hideo Kojima's Snatcher, or more specifically, the death of Jean-Jack Gibson, one of the supporting characters who is found dead with his head liberated from the confines of his shoulders. A similar scene and reference was placed at the Capitol Post building in Fallout 3.[3]
