guess ill stick with jack then (no critical hit multp)RG (xbox) 16:43, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

I don't know if it's because enemies in The Pitt are weaker than enemies in the wasteland or not, but Autoaxes kill much faster than rippers, even than Jack. I won't be able to say for sure until I take out for a spin against a deathclaw, but I'm definitely impressed with their killing power. Some Sort 07:15, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Would its condition go down if you mutiltd a corpse?

Jack has a much higher damage potential if you have Finesse, high luck and/or Ninja and Better Criticals. Much higher. The auto axes do have an improved range, however. 68.192.9.90 01:40, October 15, 2009 (UTC)

Is the Mauler affected by the "Auto Axpert" perk? B0B X 21:17, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

  • Remember that you can still sneak attack critical with it.

Playing on Very Hard and still I managed to get a lot of 1-hit kills with this thing. Pretty awesome.

The damage doesnt look all that good outside of VATS, but with VATS i get 1 hit kills on most things even without maxed melee skill/strength--94.30.192.254 08:37, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Man Opener[]

This or the man opener? Which is better?Jetholt (Jetty) 06:26, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

hard to say really, man opener is probably better for enemies like the enclave (power armored) main problem with the mauler is its fast (VERY FAST) degradation, so unless you use a mod that makes repairs easier it will be hard to keep it in good condition--94.30.192.254 08:34, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Actually, Rippers are more common than you would think, I stockpile them from Flak 'N Shrapnel's and Lucky Harith. And, according to math, the Man Opener beats the Mauler at enemies with > 22 DR, the two are equal at 22 DR, and the Mauler is better against enemies w/ < 22 DR. If you don't mind the heavy weight, carry both, but otherwise I would recommend the Man Opener.

I will go with the mauler until I get to higher levels, when the stronger things attack, then. :) Jetholt (Jetty) 10:04, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

just be ready to repair it alot, or stick to using it in vats--85.234.187.120 14:19, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm currently "very" confused whether to use this, the man opener, or the pyro-shishkebab. So far my man opener does heaps of damage in VATS, but takes a ton of action points.

I must be the only one not using vats with but,but without vats (only used vats on my first character) i killed a deathclaw in 3.5 secs, of course thats with 100 mele weapons but for its the best better than ripper for me.70.41.28.248 20:55, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

DPS[]

Why does damage per hit equal damage per second? The thing definitely hits more than once per second, it's somewhere around eight times per second, if I remember correctly.

best melee[]

why does it say 35 to 45 damage? i have 54 damage and i dnont even have a 100 melee skill. btw doesnt this make it the best melee wepoan.

No, you would have to consider other factors such as weight, critical hit multipliers and AP demand in order to distinguish the best melee weapons.--Drifter

you probaly also have the auto axpert perkRG (xbox) 17:28, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Well considering to get this weapon you have to have that perk anyway, does it matter?Jetholt (Jetty) 19:58, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Autoblock?[]

Didn't this weapon used to say that it automatically blocked some incoming melee hits?

Criticals?[]

The article mentions VATS sneak attack criticals being devastating with the better criticals perk. How's that possible? Even if it says that you got a sneak attack critical with it, it's crit bonus is +0, so there's no way it would do any more damage, right?

Sneak Attack Crits double both the regular damage and the crit bonus. That's how it works for Eugene, at least. Weapons like the Steel Axe and Ripper also seem to 'hit' multiple times in one VATS swing, as though it were being held against an enemy via real-time use but in a 'burst' of sorts, like automatic ranged weapons fire in bursts during VATS. --DGoose 10:45, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

sneak attack crits do double both regular and crit bonus damage but the perk better criticals only enhances crit bonus damage so i removed the note that cited that perk as a good enhancement to this weapon because it would have no effect on it what so ever. Star Paladin Cross[]

Im trying to decide whether to give the man opener or the mauler to Star paladin Cross. Can anyone help me? --Noodle0007

Give her whichever you don't use. If you don't use either, go with the Man Opener. 69.38.252.83 13:40, November 5, 2009 (UTC)

Bug?[]

I'm not sure why the elaborate description of catching is included as a bug. Every motorized cutting mechanism works exactly as is being described in the bugs section so if anything this is simply accurate physics. If one were to run a chainsaw across some loose objects they'd all go flying off in different directions, for example. It's just a fact of how the machine operates, i don't think it's a bug in the weapons programming for it to behave exactly as it would in the real world. Tetracycloide 00:31, November 7, 2009 (UTC)

something cool needs verification[]

Okay, I was just being evil when I discovered something cool. While manually holding a head I had severed from spook, I decided to use this on it. What was cool was that as I was cutting the head to make blood stains, the head just stoped being there. Not disappeared, mind you, but actually got caught on the blade. Literally CAUGHT on it. so as the blade part is moving in a circle, the head is too. I need someone to verify that this happens in their games too so I can figure out if this is a me only glitch or an everyone can have evil fun glitch(or figure out if its even a glitch considering the workings of this thing).(xbox) JerichoRCDF 23:47, December 5, 2009 (UTC)

Mauler+Samurai armor[]

Consider wearing samurai armor while wielding this weapon, it increases melee damage by 10, making the mauler even more powerful than it is by itself! Pipboy displays 84 points damage for my character (that's without psycho or yan-guai meat!).

Also, the mauler deals more damage when standing rather than crouching, but I guess that's true for all melee weapons. Of course, if you aren't crouching, you can't sneak-attack, so you lose the sneak damage bonus. But when detected, you probably should get up to increase the damage.
