The Sunset Sarsaparilla headquarters is a location that can be discovered in Fallout: New Vegas. It is the headquarters of the Sunset Sarsaparilla Corporation, and is located northwest of El Rey motel, and directly west of the NCR sharecropper farms.
Background[]
The headquarters of the company in Las Vegas is one of the largest buildings in the area, and houses corporate offices as well as the regional bottling and distribution center. The building's most notable feature is the giant bottle that also acts as the main entrance into the facility.
Layout[]
Entering the factory and to the left is Festus, a cowboy robot who asks for Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps. Asking him "Star Info" reveals a bottle cap contest, still going on even after the Great War, which triggers the quest The Legend of the Star.
A nearby terminal down the hallway to the right of the main entrance, activates a maintenance robot, Mr. Janitor, who collects bottle caps around the factory, and then disposes of them into a garbage can by the maintenance office that it is found in. Mr. Janitor gathers over 550 bottle caps.
On the ground floor, there is a Very Hard locked door. Access requires one to go up one staircase and down another, into a room with some scrap metal, miscellaneous toolbox items, and a terminal with some cryptic log messages regarding plant production line damage.
In the shipping room, there is an Average locked terminal, which upon activation, reveals a discussion regarding an experimental delivery robot that was reported to have been single-handedly running all of the distribution in the Vegas area.
In the bottling room, there is a lone surviving bottling robot. When one speaks to it, it first talks to them as they would be its master, but after realizing they are not, it becomes immediately hostile and attacks. Should the Courier bring along a companion, and they discover the surviving bottling robot, first, the robot will become hostile.
The furthest room in the back on the 2nd level factory floor has a safe, an Average locked terminal, and a hole in the floor leading to a door which remains locked until Festus is given 50 star bottle caps.
Notable loot[]
- Pew Pew, next to the dead body of Allen Marks, in the Sunset Sarsaparilla vault during the quest A Valuable Lesson. There are about 100+ caps in each of the crates in this room, for around 1,435 bottle caps.
- A Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap in an Average locked wall safe in the office with a hole in the floor.
- Sunset Sarsaparilla bottles, in which there are about 67 full bottles in crates behind the active bottling robot, and about ten more bottles outside the headquarters on the right hand side of the building behind some trucks.
Related quests[]
Notes[]
- With Robotics Expert taken as an active perk, Festus can be deactivated. If The Legend of the Star is still active, completion is impossible, as Festus can no longer be interacted with.
- Oddly, various Nuka-Cola products can be found throughout the factory.
- In the room across from the broken door blocked by debris is a empty Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle that is smaller than any other.
- According to one of the logs inside, the building was damaged due to a combination of moisture, as well as by attackers.
- Strangely enough, behind an unusable door with the words "Out of Order" on it, one can peek in and see an advertisement for a Super-Duper Mart, even though there is not one in the Mojave Wasteland.
Behind the scenes[]
- The building's wall and floor textures, lighting, small asset creation, prop placement, and final level polish were provided by Kristen Altamirano.[1]
- On a computer terminal on the second floor there is an E-Mail from one Marcus Brody, who shares the name of Indiana Jones' close friend in the Indiana Jones movies.
- There was originally another character involved with the Sunset Sarsaparilla location/star quest called Felicia. All that is left is a container called SSHQFeliciaContainer, and a space for her relevant variables in VFreeformSSHQScript. Unfortunately this area is blank giving no clues to her purpose. Presumably Felicia would have had a similar role to Malcolm Holmes, and therefore would probably be another random character who is also after the special star bottle caps. Her container contains a load of junk like Malcolm's, but surprisingly also has lots of energy weapon related stuff.
- According to an article posted at NMA, Felicia was a vendor character who would swap star bottle caps for items including Stealth Boys and mini nukes. She apparently got cut as it caused confusion/delayed the player on the Festus quest.
- There is an unused terminal here called SSHQFestusTerminal. It's description is "Festus Control Terminal" but it is otherwise blank. Perhaps this was a debug terminal, or at one stage it was possible to hack Festus to get his quest reward early?
- There's another unused terminal called "SSHQTechGuyMailTerminal" that would presumably have used an equally unused email about Festus (SSHQTechGuyMailMessage1Terminal).
- There is also an unused creature SSHQEyebot, which is a fully working eyebot that even has voiced dialogue. Possibly it was removed as the eyebots seem to be an exclusively Enclave creation. One of the emails on the computers here in the final game alludes to some kind of secret "new toy" robot from RobCo and whether they could obtain more (suggesting there is only one at SSHQ), so possibly this is what it refers to.
- There is a leveled items list for Sunset Star Caps (LootSSStarCap75). This is completely unused in the final game, but suggests at one point the idea of the player randomly finding star caps was on the cards. In the final game the only ways to get them is either by finding the hand placed ones, or by random luck opening a bottle of Sunset Sarsaparilla.
Bugs[]
- empty Sunset Sarsaparilla bottles on the floor that will disappear when looked at directly and reappear when viewed at an angle. However, you can still pick them up if you aim at them as though they were they were visible. Occasionally the same happens to the security robots destroyed by the player and some other objects. The culling in this location is glitched. In the factory there are many
- Festus and crouch next to him, you are given the option to pickpocket him. Pickpocketing Festus results in only starting a normal conversation with him, as if you were using the "Talk Festus" action(This happens with various other robots in game but not with all). When you walk up to
- Allen Marks is located in causes the boxes to phase in and out of view depending on angle and distance from the crates. Moving the crates outside the door of the room in which
- If you move the big Sunset Sarsaparilla crates from under the lamps, the lamps stay hovering in mid-air and do not move.
- if you look to the door across the very hard locked door, it may also be very hard locked even though the door is opened when you first find it.
- Festus will be turned around. On the back of his box there are various tags and stickers. For no apparent reason, occasionally
