Spider drones (officially known as the spider drone Mk VI prototype[1]) are miniature robots that were allegedly created and deployed by the Chinese Army, with their utilization being portrayed within the Anchorage Reclamation simulation, which can be accessed by the Lone Wanderer in the Fallout 3 add-on Operation: Anchorage.

Background[]

These robots served as mobile landmines for the Chinese army, and are air dropped via Chinese bombers with their primary method of attack being to approach enemy targets and explode. They are encountered briefly during the quest "Paving the Way", and thus, there is very little information to be gathered on them.

Gameplay attributes[]

A Chinese terminal entry advises the Chinese soldiers to be careful around their own drones, even though they had been allegedly configured to only target hostile forces. Additionally, one will occasionally see a Chinese soldier fighting one of these robots while traveling to the chimera depot, suggesting that the prototypes still suffer from problems with friend-or-foe recognition, or might even lack the software entirely.

Spider drones move fairly fast, making it best to shoot them at range before they get close enough to detonate. Be alert, as a sign that they are nearby can be heard in the metal clinking sounds that they robots make as they patrol the area. They have very low HP, and can usually be destroyed with a few shots from a decent firearm. Once destroyed, they will explode, with splash damage damaging any entities close enough to suffer its shrapnel.

Notes[]

  • Targeting spider drones at any distance greater than a few feet in V.A.T.S. may prove difficult, as they provide very small targets, and thus, a lower chance to hit, ranging from 0% at more than 20 feet, to about 50% at about 5 feet.
  • The center of the drone is the unused model of the cryo mine.
  • When traveling with a 3-man fire team, the team will generally destroy the mines before they can get close enough to harm the squadron.

Appearances[]

Spider drones appear in the Fallout 3 add-on Operation: Anchorage.

Behind the scenes[]

A modified version of the spider drone appears as the projectile for the spider rifle in the Fallout: New Vegas add-ons, Old World Blues and Lonesome Road.
