The sniper rifle is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

The following section is transcluded from sniper rifle. To modify, please edit the source page.

This sniper rifle is an older model of the famed DKS-501, chambered for .308 ammunition. Apart from a frame tailored for sniping, it boasts a muzzle flash dampener, a monopod that doubles as a forward grip as well as a rubberized eyepiece and stock for extra comfort.[1] It's an extremely fragile precision rifle and requires regular repair and maintenance to keep it in working condition.

Characteristics[]

Sniper rifle blown up

Sniper rifle expanded

The sniper rifle is a semi-automatic rifle, designed primarily as a long-range weapon. It deals reasonable damage, has a scope with 3.5x magnification and very little weapons spread.

Once modified with a suppressor, it becomes the perfect weapon for an assassin when "Hidden" in sneak mode, alerting only those fired upon by the player character at no loss of faction reputation (even if the death is witnessed by nearby non-player-characters). With the added bonus of sneak attack criticals, most targets are usually dispatched with a single shot to the head. Due to the rifle's decent rate of fire, any target that survives the first shot can be dispatched quickly with a second shot before alerting any nearby non-player-characters.

The sniper rifle is extremely fragile and breaks completely after only 396 shots from full condition.

Notes[]

  • Prior to patch 1.2.0.314, the sniper rifle dealt 62 points of damage on normal and critical hits, and had a crit multiplier of 5. They were reduced to 42 damage and a multiplier of 1 in this patch.
  • Prior to patch 1.3.0.452, the sniper rifle also used 38 AP per shot, fired 1.6 times per second, and had a spread of one. They were changed to 27 AP, 1.9 shots per second, and a spread of zero. In addition, the patch overwrote the damage and crit chance changes from 1.2.0.314, setting them to 45 damage and a multiplier of 2.

Bugs[]

  • PCIcon pc Xbox 360Icon xbox360 Sometimes after changing ammunition type, reloading animation plays twice.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Xbox 360Icon xbox360 When aiming, nothing is shown but a blank terminal screen instead of the scope reticule. This glitch can occur after logging onto a terminal in which the terminal screen does not show. Loading a previous save or quitting has no effect. Shutting off the console and then loading a save fixes the problem on Xbox 360 and PS3.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Xbox 360Icon xbox360 Sometimes while aiming with the scope, brightly colored shapes will appear instead of the standard scope image, obscuring 3/4 of the screen.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Sometimes the game will freeze when equipping the rifle. Turning off the system and loading a save will fix this.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Xbox 360Icon xbox360 Carbon fiber parts modification sets the sniper rifle weight to 3 Lbs., but will still take 8 Lbs. from your carry capacity. NOTE: Bug may be fixed with latest patch as of July 18, 2011.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Xbox 360Icon xbox360 When holding the aim button in third person view while switching to the sniper rifle, the end of the barrel will be visible in the bottom right corner of the scope. This also affects the anti-materiel rifle.
