Sentry bots are a model of robot found in the Capital Wasteland after 2277.
Background[]
The heaviest class of combat robot in the United States military, the sentry bot sacrifices speed and maneuverability for sheer resilience and overwhelming firepower. While the Assaultron is designed for melee combat and the Mister Gutsy is a jack-of-all-trades, the sentry bot's purpose is to engage the enemy at range with a variety of weapons, including miniguns, Gatling lasers, rocket launchers, and even back-mounted cluster grenade launchers, while its thick armor and multiple redundant systems allow it to survive extended engagements. It's commonly considered to be one of the most dangerous robots ever created and RobCo Industries' finest fighting robot. Late models are also provided with the ability to self-destruct to prevent enemy from recovering the robot.[1] Early sentry bot models were issued serial numbers in the SB-#### format (model, then serial), with later models transitioning to the standardized alphanumeric registration in the ABC-###### format.[2]
An early sentry bot model developed by RobCo Industries, designed specifically for heavy combat. The bot is divided into two halves, with the upper body containing the central processing unit, power core, and mounting the primary optical receptor. They are protected by a cast armored shell, consisting of just three pieces: The torso and upper assembly, a separate rear plate giving access to internal mechanics, and the head assembly protecting the main optical receptor. Its arms act as hardpoints, accepting a variety of weapons including miniguns, Gatling lasers, and rocket launchers. The lower body, connected by four shock absorbers and a centrally-mounted duct, contains fans venting accumulated hot air outside the chassis, preventing overheating. For movement, the lower body is fitted with three independent legs that provide it with a stable firing platform in any environment, much like a machine gun mount. The legs terminate in semi-spherical wheels (rubberized on the front, solid steel scoops on the back), giving it excellent mobility as well.[3][4] Unlike the Gutsy or Assaultron, all sentry bots come with a simple synthetic personality.[5]
Characteristics[]
All sentry bots encountered in the game have either a minigun or Gatling laser on the right pylon and a missile launcher on the left one. As expected, they are the most resilient robot in the game, with as many hit points as a deathclaw and far greater damage resistance to boot. Furthermore, they cannot be crippled with a dart gun nor do they have any critical weak spots: Their head and legs take -50% and -25% damage respectively from all normal attacks. Its one flaw is the combat inhibitor mounted on the back and its slow turn rate, allowing the player to circle-strafe and destroy the inhibitor, causing it to frenzy (though it's pointless in areas without additional enemies). pulse grenades are very effective weapons against the bot. Using the Robotic Expert is also a good way to permanently shut it down (the talk option is useless).
Sentry bots sit at the top of the game's robotic food chain and are routinely found roaming the Capital Wasteland, either alone or in groups of two to three. The Outcasts and the Enclave use them on a regular basis, with a pair of unique sentry bots found at Raven Rock, guarding the entrance to the President's chambers. They will kill the Enclave soldiers standing at their post, allowing the player to reach Eden.
One sentry bot is posted alongside Paladin Bael at the entrance to the Citadel. It respawns, providing an endless supply of loot, but will be removed from the game after completing Take It Back!. A quest-related sentry bot is found in Big Town and can be repaired to aid the town in defending against super mutants following Big Trouble in Big Town. Another two can spawn alongside the Mechanist at Canterbury Commons.

Notable quotes[]
Sentry bots possess an authoritative array of speech programming, mainly expressing its current programming out loud, much like the protectron. However, sentry bots have a "deeper" voice, instilling fear in all.
- "Alert. Non-combatants are advised to leave the area. Security sweep in progress. Lethal force may be used without warning."
- "No hostiles detected. Continuing perimeter sweep."
- "Threat level: red."
- "Do not interfere with security operations."
- "Security lockdown in effect. Hostile target acquired!"
- "Adding target to threat matrix!"
- "Hostile detected. Commencing neutralisation."
- "Warning: use of lethal force is authorized!"
- "Alert! Non combattants are advised to leave the area. Security sweep in progress. Lethal force may be used without warning."
- "Alert. Hostile detected. Lethal force authorized for all units."
- "Do not interfere with security protocols."
- "Have a nice day."
Behind the scenes[]
- Both the Enclave and Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel were supposed to have bots with unique textures. They are not used in the game, with both using the base steel sentry bot.
Bugs[]
- Outcast sentry bots will always spawn with the Gatling laser arm, despite resources for the minigun variants being present.
- A disabled sentry bot may be stuck in an animation loop if the animation did not finish when it was disabled.
