The Presidential metro is a network of metro tunnels under Washington, D.C. in the Capital Wasteland.

Background[]

The Presidential metro was once used by the President of the United States and other government officials in the event that their life was in danger and they needed to be securely and quickly transported to Adams Air Force Base for extraction. It connects the Presidential sub level beneath the White House with Adams Air Force Base and the United States Capitol building's east wing. Naturally, information concerning this highly secure metro's internal layout was for authorized personnel only; failure to identify oneself will result in security units being summoned.[1][2][3] Even after two centuries of disuse, the metro is still overseen by M.A.R.Go.T., a learning computer system.[4][5] In accordance with U.S. Security Statute A567/B, M.A.R.Go.T. ensures that all passengers have Senatorial identification at all times to be permitted in the metro.[6] The train system was designed to be fully automated, but will only take authorized personnel to their desired destination.[7][8]

At the time the Lone Wanderer enters the metro, however, the presidential metro system has become swarmed with feral ghouls and is functioning at only 22% capability, with the main fuse having been forcibly removed, but the metro cars are still functioning.[9] The security breach in the southeast tunnels have made traveling to Adams AFB impossible, but sentry bots are currently attempting to eliminate the threat. The metro's main sentinel unit has a replacement fuse, but M.A.R.Go.T. cannot risk making the repair until the breach of security has been dealt with.[10][11]

Layout[]

The metro branches into a triangular network. The west rail is caved in and has the remains of a police officer against the corner. The north rail is also caved in and has a skeleton with some RadAway and Mentats nearby. The southbound rail is clear but leads to a mildly radioactive dead end. The equipment room earlier on the rail leads to another southbound rail filled with sentry bots and ghouls. Near the end of the rail to the west is an exit to the United States Capitol building and to the east is the metro car that goes directly to Adams Air Force Base.

Notes[]

  • Unlike other metro tunnels where the trains have been rendered useless and the player is forced to walk from station to station, or the train tunnel leading to the Pitt where a loading screen takes the place of an actual journey, the Presidential metro line is usable.
  • About halfway down the second tunnel you can look through a fence and watch two feral ghouls get splattered by a Metro train.
  • This area contains many Easter eggs, and players should take a second look at what appear to be dead ends.
  • At the junction where the working metro can take you to Adams AFB, there are two locked doors requiring a key to enter. There is no key to be found, however. The doors open when you kill the Presidential Metro bot, although this will of course make all other bots/turrets turn hostile. There is no loot behind these doors (just more bots).
  • Past the M.A.R.Go.T. computer entrance, at the end of the tracks there's a gnome with a camera and on the tracks, are two teddy bears tied to the tracks with a note saying 'Help Us' between them.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The system concept and station design is based on the Capitol Subway.
  • The train is never actually used by the game: Instead, the camera is snapped to an NPC "wearing" the train and running along a pre-set track. Yes, this is the case.

Bugs[]

  • PCIcon pc PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Occasionally when the Reaver is killed it may fling back down the hall where it came from.
  • PCIcon pc Xbox 360Icon xbox360 The feral ghoul reaver invulnerability glitch is especially common in the presidential metro.
  • PCIcon pc Occasionally in V.A.T.S. mode, if you are standing near an npc or follower, upon exiting V.A.T.S., you may become stuck in the ceiling, and be unable to get back down. Reloading a save will fix this, or for PC users you can use console commands.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360 Every now and then when you have Fawkes with you he will glitch out of the train when you go to Adam's Air Force Base.

Appearances[]

The Presidential metro appears only in the Fallout 3 add-on Broken Steel.

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "I'm looking for the tunnels to Adams Air Force Base."
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Information on the internal layout of the Presidential Metro System is for authorized personnel only. Please provide proper identification or I will be forced to summon security units and lock out this access point. Repeating query: Please identify yourself."
The Lone Wanderer: "Please! I just want to get to Adams Air Force Base!"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "That is not proper identification. You are in direct violation of U.S. Security Statute A567/B. Security is now being summoned. Have a nice day."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  2. The Lone Wanderer: "Why does it matter?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Unauthorized personnel pose a potential threat to the Presidential Metro System. Therefore, anyone accessing this system must be identified. Repeating query: Please identify yourself."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "It's none of your business who I am."
M.A.R.Go.T.: "That statement is erroneous. This is a highly restricted area and all personnel must possess proper identification. Please provide proper identification or I will be forced to summon security units and lock out this access point. Repeating query: Please identify yourself."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Hmmm. Suit yourself. Seems like a waste of time."
M.A.R.Go.T.: "This unit has been successfully carrying out its primary function for over 200 years. My primary function is paramount to any other function and must be followed until I am no longer able to perform the task. I appreciate your concern regarding this matter, and have noted and filed it in my memory array."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "Has anyone else used the tunnels to the base?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "The last recorded person to use that line was approximately 200 years and 8 months ago. The tunnel and active train car have been sealed for safety ever since catastrophic damage to this facility was detected."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  6. M.A.R.Go.T.: "In accordance with U.S. Security Statute A567/B, passengers must have their Senatorial identification ready for inspection at all times."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "How do I use these tunnels to get to the base?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Simply board the train on its outbound side and activate the control console. The system is completely automated, and it will take you to your desired destination."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
The Lone Wanderer: "Why am I wasting time talking to you? You're just a stupid machine!"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "That is not proper identification. You are in direct violation of U.S. Security Statute A567/B. Security is now being summoned. Have a nice day."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "How about the Presidential Metro System Status Report."
M.A.R.Go.T.: "This complex has sustained catastrophic damage and is only functioning at 22 percent of its full capability. The Main Fuse for the power relay in the Adams Air Force Base Tunnel has been forcibly removed, damaging the system. Maintenance on this system is currently impossible due to the security breach."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  10. The Lone Wanderer: "How do I use these tunnels to get to the base?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Access to the train line to Adams Air Force Base is currently impossible due to a security breach in the southeast tunnels. The breach has caused damage to the train line as well, and it must be repaired before it can be utilized."
The Lone Wanderer: "I need more details... What's the breach all about?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Internal visual sensing equipment is detecting numerous unidentified persons in the southeast tunnels area. The individuals have damaged metro equipment and refused dialogue with our security units. In accordance with U.S. Security Statute A567/B, the use of deadly force has been authorized."
The Lone Wanderer: "So what exactly did these unidentified things damage in here?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "One of the main power relays for the Adams Air Force Base line has been disrupted by the forced removal of a Main Fuse. I have a replacement part on our main Sentinel Unit, but I cannot risk the repair until the breach is dealt with."
    (M.A.R.Go.T.'s dialogue)
  11. The Lone Wanderer: "How do I use these tunnels to get to the base?"
M.A.R.Go.T.: "Access to the train line to Adams Air Force Base is currently impossible due to significant damage caused by the former security breach. The damaged hardware must be repaired before the line can be utilized."
