    Background[]

    Philippi Battlefield Cemetery commemorates the Battle of Philippi that occurred during the American Civil War on June 3rd, 1861.[1] The battle is notable for having been the first organized land action of the war, having the first battlefield amputations, and having encouraged the western counties of Virginia to form their own state, West Virginia.[2]
