The young Pete used to be the apprentice to Don, the old Keeper of the Story until a couple months ago. His promotion to the post of current Keeper came suddenly when Don learned the hard way that whiskey and land mines do not go together well. Despite his young age, Pete takes his job seriously and treats the history of the Boomers with respect and expects others to do the same.[1]
Interactions with the player character[]
Interactions overview[]
This character is essential. Essential characters cannot be killed.
Volare!: Listening to Pete's lecture about the history of the Boomers will grant a point of fame with the Boomers. He will also direct the player to Loyal if they ask about work.
Walking off in the middle of the lecture will earn Boomer infamy points (according to a whimsically named variable petusinterruptus)
I Could Make You Care: If Veronica listens to the lecture alongside the Courier and then listens to the player's asking questions of Pete, she will comment on the Boomers and offer new dialogue when talked to. This happens only as one of the three necessary triggers to start the quest, afterwards there's no new dialogue.
Other interactions[]
After Pete finishes his lecture, the player can ask further questions about the Boomers. Each question can then be followed with a comment. Comments with skill checks offer additional experience and insight into the history of the tribe, and two points of fame. If the necessary skills are too low, the player can still gain fame by choosing positive responses, each providing a single point of fame.

"You're the outsider! Mother Pearl sent word that you'd be stopping by. You must be eager to hear the story of our people!"
Behind the scenes[]
The concept of a tribe member preserving the history of the tribe orally is commonly encountered in real life and fiction. Examples include Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and The Giver, a science fiction novel. Note that it is not stated if Pete carries the memory on in just an oral fashion.
The line about "Slipping the surly bonds of earth" is similar to a similar line in High Flight by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.
Bugs[]
PCPlayStation 3Xbox 360 Pete's voice actor Sam Cohen, will say "automatic warheads" instead of "atomic warheads" if the player asks him why the base was empty.
PCPlayStation 3Xbox 360 Pete may stop telling his story after the first segment. Remedies include bumping into him or resetting him via console (disable, then enable). Note that it may be necessary to push Pete quite a long distance for him to reset.
Xbox 360 Pete may not retell the story when prompted to.
↑The Courier: "Who are you?" Pete: "Me? I'm Pete, Keeper of the Story. I know I seem kind of young. I was the apprentice Keeper of the Story until a couple months ago, but ol' Keeper Don, well... Whiskey and land mines don't go together. So it's up to me. I bet you want to know everything about us!" (Pete's dialogue (Fallout: New Vegas))
