We had a string of bad harvests a few years back. Pa said he couldn't afford to feed but three youngins, or we'd starve. As the biggest one it was my job to go join the Army so's my sisters could eat and so's we wouldn't all be killed by raiders and Jesus would love us.

Private O'Hanrahan is an NCR soldier assigned to The Misfits at Camp Golf in Fallout: New Vegas

A Christian farm kid from rural New California, O'Hanrahan's family got by with farming 40 acres of farmland (primarily maize and brahmin). Despite some lean years, the family had a good life, until a string of bad harvests in the 2270s forced the family to make some hard decision. O'Hanrahan Senior realized he can't feed a family of five without someone starving, so Junior, as the oldest child and their only son, was sent to join the Army. After leaving his mother, father, and two sisters, he went through basic training and was shipped out to New Vegas to be part of the Mojave campaign[1][2]

Essentially a gentle giant, he likes being assigned to the picturesque Camp Golf and gets along fine with the rest of the squad, despite his dislike for violence and hurting people. He attributes this to the influence of his mother, who always reminded him that he needs to mind himself due to his strength and size.[3]

As far as problems with the Misfits are concerned, he believes that they are tied not so much to the absence of rigorous training, but the fact that they don't talk to each other and are mostly just cross with each other. He believes that a little more basic human niceness would go a long way towards getting the squad in shape.[4]

He's wary of advancing his proposition to the squad, as he fears they wouldn't take him seriously, on account of his straightforward personality.[5]

O'Hanrahan appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

  1. The Courier: "Tell me a little more about yourself."
O'Hanrahan: "Well, I was born on a farm out in California. Weren't much - me, Ma and Pa, my two sisters and about 40 acres of corn and brahmin. Didn't never have no problems really, except for some lean years. Then I joined up and got shipped out here to New Vegas."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "How'd you end up in the Army?"
O'Hanrahan: "Well, as it turns out, we had a string of bad harvests a few years back. Pa said he couldn't afford to feed but three youngins, or we'd starve. As the biggest one it was my job to go join the Army so's my sisters could eat and so's we wouldn't all be killed by raiders and Jesus would love us. It's all right, I guess. I don't like all the fighting we gotta do, though."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "What do you think of Camp Golf?"
O'Hanrahan: "Oh, it's a fine place. The lake is real pretty, and we don't get bothered much by them Legion fellers. I ain't scared! I just don't like hurting folks, is all. Ma always used to tell me "boy, you're the biggest and the strongest, so you mind yourself!" Every day she told me that. Guess I done took it to heart."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "Sgt. McCredie asked me to talk to you about getting your squad in shape."
O'Hanrahan: "To me? Well, I'll tell you what I think this squad needs: a little more basic human niceness."
    The Courier: "Human niceness?"
O'Hanrahan: "That's right. Folks just don't talk to other folks, and everybody's always cross with each other."
The Courier: "That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
O'Hanrahan: "Maybe you just ain't had a healthy dose of human niceness in a while."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "So you think I should find ways to convince the Misfits to get along?"
O'Hanrahan: "That'd be swell. Only, if they knew the idea came from me, they probably wouldn't take you serious no more, so maybe you oughta think about it first. And I sure hope you're more convincing than I am, or they ain't gonna listen."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  6. O'Hanrahan: "Is it true? The big boss ranger done killed his self?"
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
The Courier: "Yes, it's true. I don't know why."
O'Hanrahan: "Some folks just ain't cut out for Army life, I guess."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
The Courier: "Yes, but it's a classified secret. Don't tell anybody."
    O'Hanrahan: "Oh, don't worry! I won't!"
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
The Courier: "Yes. He was sabotaging the Army to force the NCR to go home."
O'Hanrahan: "Well that don't make no sense. We came all this way; why don't he want to stay? It's nice here."
    (O'Hanrahan's dialogue)
  7. O'Hanrahan: "Y'all sure are a big ol' hero. I gotta wright my mama and tell her I met you!"
