Nick Valentine is a detective and potential companion of the Sole Survivor, living in Diamond City in 2287.
Background[]
A private eye plying his trade in Diamond City, Nick makes a living tracking down secrets and revealing them. As careful as he tries to be,[1] it's not surprising that this gumshoe runs into his fair share of altercation. His latest job involved finding a daughter of someone wealthy from Diamond City - except the job took a turn for the worse, when it turned out she joined Skinny Malone, becoming a lover of the mob boss from Goodneighbor. The Triggermen didn't take too kindly to the old synth, and imprisoned him in the overseer's office. His residence is the Valentine Detective Agency, and has a multitude of signs around Diamond City advertising the office.[2]
Nick doesn't remember anything from the time before he was a synth, awakening in a trash heap in Cambridge one day. His past is known to his "brother," DiMA, who also orchestrated his escape. The two were the first synths capable of independent thinking and judgment. One of the Institute's experiments had to do with how synthetic brains could process personality, and so they adapted two synths for their experimentation. DiMA was allowed to develop his based on experience, while Nick was an attempt to copy a personality matrix into a synth brain - the original Nick Valentine's.[3] The two underwent the same kind of lengthy experimentation, every day for months, strapped down to a workshop table. Immobile and operated on as the Institute rooted around in his artificial brain. Eventually, though, he managed to orchestrate an escape, taking Nick with him. The failsafes stripped their memories of the Institute, but the two were finally free.[4] Unfortunately, Nick did not recognize his brother and attacked him on the spot, still thinking he was the pre-War Nick Valentine. Beaten and damaged, Nick was abandoned...but survived.[5]
As a result of the experiment, Nick is a copy of a pre-War BADTFL officer, Nick Valentine, involved in Operation: Winter's End.[6] His memories, personality, and even skills come from the detective.[7] The synthetic Nick was stuck in a test chamber for years, monitored by Institute researchers - then suddenly, he was disposed of, waking up in a trash heap in Cambridge.[8] The memories of the late detective were still alive and fresh, leading to a confusing couple of weeks. He wandered through the wastelands and received a cautious welcome from wastelanders. The first settlement he entered, he was grilled for an hour before he was cleared for contact with others. They warmed up to the old robot, showing him kindness he never experienced before - kindness he tries to show to others ever since.[9] The town would later be wiped off the map by raiders, its inhabitants fate is a mystery.[10]
Eventually, he moved to Diamond City, shortly after the Broken Mask incident in 2229, when a third generation synth malfunctioned and killed the patrons of Power Noodles before Diamond City security could put it down.[11][12][13][14] Normally, he would be refused, perhaps even shot on sight, but Nick had an argument - he rescued the then-Mayor's daughter. He stumbled by accident on a crying girl and four thugs - after disposing of them, he took her home and earned himself a place in the City. Mayor Henry Roberts did so against the protests of DC citizens, but eventually they all warmed up to Nick, in no small part due to the fact that he never concealed his synthetic nature.[15]
At first, he did odd jobs nobody else wanted to do, becoming DC's handyman, a fixer. Eventually, however, he started doing jobs of a slightly different nature. He was a neutral party, helping people with their problems. when the wife runs off with a new paramour and takes the rent money with her? Talk to the Synth. An upset father decides moving him and the kids to Goodneighbor in the dead of night's not the worst damn idea since the bomb? Go get Nick. After a while, the jobs came by so often that he hung up the handyman's clothes and put on a hat and trenchcoat instead, becoming a hard-boiled noir detective of the Jewel of the Commonwealth. Life was finally normal for the synth.[16] And though he paid for it in parts and coolant, he gradually became known not just as the Synth, but as Nick the detective.[17]
However, there remains a shadow in his life, unfinished business tied to the ancient Nick Valentine...[18]
Personality[]
Nick's personality is an evolution of the pre-War Nick Valentine's: A hard boiled detective with nerves of steel and a strong moral sense. Valentine believes in being kind to your fellow man, in giving second chances, but is also unyielding in his pursuit of vengeance against those who wronged him or people he cared about. Nick doesn't quite know how to interpret the original Valentine's memories. Although he believes in pursuing his vendetta against Eddie Winter, to put things to rights, he also wants to be his own man, rather than merely a ghost of the past brought back from the dead by the Institute's machinations. Until he figures out what to do with himself, he remains a staunch, loyal ally to his friends, an implacable foe to his enemies, and a charming artificial detective to all prospective clients.[19]

Fort Hagen: Reunions, on the roof while the Prydwen passes overhead, into the Commonwealth. | In this line – which is a paraphrase – he is referring to the disbelief of the sight of the invading army via armored dirigible, this is in reference to the lover and his reaction to being driving insane at the loss of his love Lenore. As shown in the character the talking Raven. | "Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing." |
Three times; the first is after gaining Nick Valentine's affinity to admiration, the next two are during Long Time Coming describing Eddie Winter's machination after their confrontation. | The first line is used ironically, describing his encounter with people after waking up after the Great War thinking he's his predecessor. The second is also used ironically, describing Eddie Winter's machination to extend his life, and the final is after dealing with Eddie Winter. Spoken in a satisfactory manner with the murder of Eddie Winter; quoting the character Miranda in The Tempest by Shakespeare (Act 5, Scene 1). |
|
The Nucleus: Cleansing the Land, outside the blast radius of the intercontinental ballistic missile. | In this line Nick is quoting Robert Oppenheimer in the infamous interview about the Trinity nuclear explosion. Which itself is a paraphrase of Krishna to Arjuna from the Bhagavad Gita. |

- ↑ The Sole Survivor: "So, who are you, Nick?"
Nick Valentine: "That's a question I've been trying to figure out myself for a long damn time. I know I'm a synth, authentic Institute handiwork. But I'm still mechanical, not bioengineered like the fancy synths giving everyone the willies these days. I get tune-ups now instead of check-ups. But my memories, my personality, they're all lifted from some cop who volunteered for an experiment back before the war. They scanned his brain and copied it onto the hardware that runs between my ears. Don't know why they chose to make a robot based on some pre-war cop instead of a math genius or a bioengineer. But hey, maybe that's why the Institute tossed me in the garbage instead of turning me into one of their people snatchers."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "What do you remember about the Institute?"
Nick Valentine: "It's all pretty hazy from back then, but now and then I get glimpses. Life inside the Institute... they keep you isolated. A single test chamber was my whole world for years. And someone was always watching. Then one day you wake up on the other side. And that's it. They've cut you loose. Welcome to the Brave New World... with such people in it."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Wait? The original Nick was from my time?"
Nick Valentine: "Sure was. Which meant, when I finally ended up out here, it was quite the rude awakening. I remember waking up one day in a garbage heap, a body in tatters and a head full of memories belonging to a man who'd been dead for 200 years. Suffice to say it was a confusing couple of weeks. Folks didn't really know much about synths back then, so when I finally ran into people, they mostly treated me with caution rather than hostility. But the kids, they weren't afraid. I think his name was Jim. The first person to actually speak to me after I got the boot from the Institute. My first human contact in this world. Grilled me for an hour. Once they'd seen I wasn't going to hurt anyone, the other folks in the neighborhood came out to ogle the mechanical man. It eventually turned into a pretty swell soiree. Local mechanic even gave me a once over, free of charge. Those people, they treated me like a human being. I've been trying to return the favor ever since. It's a surprisingly rare trait out here sometimes. Something I've noticed you got a fondness for. Part of the reason I've stuck around this long."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Where's that town? We should go visit."
Nick Valentine: "I tried to go back and say thanks, once I'd gotten myself established, but the place was wiped off the map. Raiders. Don't know what happened to the people."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Massacre of the CPG? What's that?"
Nick Valentine: "The Commonwealth Provisional Government. Years back a group of settlements tried to get together and form a coalition. Every settlement with even a hint of clout sent representatives to try and hash out an agreement. Only the Institute sent a representative of their own, a Synth. The man killed every rep at the talks. The Commonwealth Provisional Government was over before it even got off the ground. I took up in town not long after. I was damn lucky they didn't just tell me to scram right then and there."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ Nick Valentine: "Hey. Let me ask you something. It's just, with everything that's happened with you, your family. It's a whole hell of a lot to process. I wanted to make sure you're holding up alright."
The Sole Survivor: "I don't know, Nick. My family's in tatters. I've been dropped into this place where everything's trying to kill me. You tell me."
Nick Valeninte: "I'd expect you feel lost, scared, and mad as hell. I sure did. Took me a long damn time to get a feel for this place. Thank goodness I found Diamond City. It's got its flaws, sure, but it beats the hell out of anywhere else in the Commonwealth. Course, when I took up there back when, people were just as scared of the Institute as they are now, maybe more. The massacre of the CPG was still pretty fresh in people's minds at that point, and folks were still losing sleep over the Broken Mask. Plenty of people assumed I was just a saboteur, moving in to melt down the reactor or poison the drinking water. But, at the time, they couldn't exactly turn me away."

- ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Broken Mask?"
Nick Valentine: "This was long before I'd moved to town, but apparently, some gentleman-type shows up in Diamond City, heads down to Power Noodles. Guess he didn't like the food because he pulled his pistol and opened fire on the folks enjoying theirs. When security finally put enough holes in him to drop him, they say he was full of servos and sprockets, just like yours truly. Seems he malfunctioned, went berserk. It was the first time people realized that Synths had stopped looking like me and started looking like them. Considering what these folks went through, I felt real lucky they let me in the front gate at all."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Why'd they let you in?"
Nick Valentine: "Because I'd rescued the mayor's daughter. Gal of about fifteen, pride and joy of the mayor back then, man by the name of Henry Roberts. The young miss Roberts decided she'd run off with some caravan hand she'd known for an evening. Turns out the guy was part of a gang of kidnappers. I didn't even know who I was rescuing, just stumbled on a crying girl and four toughs. I took her home and the Mayor dubbed me a hero, offered me a place in town. Lots of folks protested, said I was a spy, but he wouldn't have it. Taking up in the city was tricky at first, but I never tried to hide what I was and people seemed to warm to that."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "What's with the outfit?"
Nick Valentine: "After I started the agency it just seemed like the sorta thing a detective ought to wear. I got some old memories, prewar, faded to all heck, of guys dressed like this, doin' what I do. Puttin' on the hat and trenchcoat, I figured it let folks know I was serious about the whole thing. "Clothes make the man" and all that. Guess I felt they made me the man I wanted to be."
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Was it hard settling in?"
Nick Valentine: "They sure didn't make it easy. I started off doing the jobs no one else wanted. I got more banged up being Diamond City's handyman than I ever did living out in the ruins. But I guess folks never forgot I rescued the Mayor's daughter, so they started coming to me when people went missing. Wife runs off with a new paramour and takes the rent money with her? Talk to the Synth. An upset father decides moving him and the kids to Goodneighbor in the dead of night's not the worst damn idea since the bomb? Go get Nick. After a while, the jobs got so backed up, they didn't even ask me to do the handyman stuff anymore. Hell, I was so happy to do it, it was months before I started charging anyone. I never stopped being Nick the Synth, but it was Nick the detective folks came to see. It was about then that things, things finally started feeling normal. It took me a long time to realize that home is where you make it. With some time and effort, this place can be home for you, too. Long story, but I hope it helps. You wanna get moving?"
(Nick Valentine's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Don't you see, Nick? You're finally free. There is no "other Nick" anymore. Just you."
Nick Valentine: "I wish it was that easy. But it's not. Because I WAS Nick Valentine. I had his memories. His fears. All that poor bastard's hope. I remember getting the call to head to some lab in Cambridge to get that neurotrans-whatever. And the next thing I know, I'm in a trash heap, my family, my home, my entire life, gone. Then I discover, all those things, they weren't even mine. Everything I ever was belonged to Nick. I'd hoped with Winter gone, the last hint of that old world snuffed out, I could finally be free. But being out here with you, what I finally realized after all this time was that taking down Winter, it wasn't about Nick or Jenny or even you or me. It was about justice, about doing what's right. And that act of goodness, that's ours. All the good we've done. That's ours and ours alone. And even if that's the only thing in this world I can ever claim as mine, not Nick's, not the Institute's, but mine, then I can die happy. And none of it would have ever happened if it weren't for you. I'm not sure I'll ever be to thank you for that. Well, come on. We're not helping anyone standing around here."
