This whole place would fall apart if it weren't for Dom and me keeping anyone from causing too much trouble. Fat, old Roe may think he runs the place, but it's only because Dom lets the idiot.
Machete was born in 2258. She is one of the fiercest defenders Little Lamplight has ever seen: Machete earned her nickname at the age of 7, when she killed a mole rat in the caves armed only with a knife as big as her arm. Since then, she has been a bona fide celebrity. When she turned 16, she got disoriented in a dust storm and got lost, eventually arriving at Canterbury Commons instead of Big Town. To this day, she refuses to admit that she went to the wrong place. Still, Dominic D'Ellsadro, Canterbury Commons' senior law enforcer, saw her potential to provide security for the future of the camp, and after a year of his guidance, she has earned a fair amount of respect from the locals.[1]
This respect may have gotten to her head a little too much; she is convinced that Canterbury Commons would completely fall apart without her or Dominic to keep people from causing trouble, and she neither has faith in nor any respect for Mayor Roe.[2] Other facets of her attitude are similar: she is curt and generally unpleasant, citing that her job is much too important for her to be doing anything other than her job and her sole purpose is to "keep some of those caravaneers in line."[3] The only person she respects is Dominic with whom she shares a place. Despite her unpleasant demeanor, Derek Pacion has a crush on her.[4]
Daily schedule
Machete patrols Canterbury Commons from 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M., eats until 1:00 P.M., patrols till 6:00 P.M., eats till 7:00 P.M., then patrols again till 2:00 A.M., after which she goes to bed and wakes up at 8:00 A.M.

Since then, she has been a bona fide celebrity. When she turned 16, she got disoriented in a dust storm and got lost, eventually arriving at Canterbury Commons instead of Big Town. ↑The Lone Wanderer: "What can you tell me about Canterbury Commons?" Machete: "This whole place would fall apart if it weren't for Dom and me keeping anyone from causing too much trouble. Fat, old Roe may think he runs the place, but it's only because Dom lets the idiot." (Machete's dialogue)
↑Machete: "What do you want? Can't you see I'm busy?" The Lone Wanderer: "I didn't mean to interrupt. I just wanted to say hi." Machete: "Fine, hi, whatever. I'm Machete, and I've got better things to do than talk with you. Scram." The Lone Wanderer: "Watch your attitude. It'll get you in trouble." Machete: "Yeah, maybe. But you need one to keep some of those caravaners in line. And to keep them from getting too friendly, if you catch my drift. Even in a nice place like this, a girl's best friend is a good knife, right?" (Machete's dialogue)
↑Joe Porter: "You oughta be proud - that's hard work. So why do you look so blue?" Derek Pacion: "Nothing's wrong. It's just... you think there's a chance Machete might think I'm cool? Like, maybe when I'm older?" Joe Porter: "Oh man, just like when I was a kid! Maybe you ought to go talk to her, Derek." Derek Pacion: "No, no, never mind. Pretend I didn't say anything." (Joe Porter's and Derek Pacion's dialogue)
↑The Lone Wanderer: "Did you get your nickname in Lamplight?" Machete: "Good guess! I was the toughest defender they ever saw in Lamplight. I earned my nickname fighting off a Mole Rat with a knife big as my arm. When I left, I figured I'd pass on a cushy place like Big Town. I ended up here, Dom took me on as a guard, and that's that." (Machete's dialogue)
