Senior Scribe Linda Schuler is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel (Mojave chapter) living in the Hidden Valley bunker in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background

Linda Schuler is the head physician of the Hidden Valley Bunker, capable of healing any medical problem that may arise in the course of a Brother's duties. Although that should be the theoretical extent of her duties, in practice, she is performing all of the duties normally in the domain of the Head Scribe, including research team supervision, report preparation, attending meetings, and so on, and so forth. Despite that, she is still formally below the actual Head Scribe, Lars Taggart, which annoys her to no end. She is particularly critical of his relationship with Melissa Watkins, an apprentice recently transferred under Taggart's oversight for specialist VR training.[1][2][3][4] She repeatedly tried to remove Taggart from his position, but Elder McNamara always refused her, claiming that Taggart's work was crucial to the Brotherhood's cause.[5]

Notable quotes

  • "This? This is nothing. You should see some of the wounds I've seen paladins come back with."
  • "By Steel, I haven't seen wounds like these since HELIOS. I've got to get you treated quickly. "
  • "You're making a mistake, but that's just my opinion. What do I know, after all? I've only studied medicine my entire life." (commenting on refusing medical treatment for wounds)
  • "Suit yourself. I'm sure there are ghouls and other mutants who once said the same thing." (commenting on refusing to be cured of radiation poisoning)
  • "There's a rumor going around that you were behind Hardin's takeover. I suppose his leadership is better than none at all. Time will tell. So what brings you by today?"
  • "Hello, you must be the outsider everyone is talking about. I'm Linda Schuler. If you ever need medical attention, this is the place to come."

Behind the scenes

  • Originally, the player was supposed to be able to spy on Taggart for Schuler and discover a PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) virtual simulation, according to the following script attached to VDialogueHiddenValleyLindaSchulerTopic009 (I don't appreciate how much harder I have to work to cover for his tendency to focus on his personal projects. I try not to think too much about his personal proclivities.:
This might not be necessary. I might be able to
add a top level topic for telling her what you
found out and simply have it check to see if you
discovered the PTSD sim.

References

  1. The Courier: "So you're a doctor?"
Linda Schuler: "Yes, I handle all medical needs in the bunker. If you're ever wounded, I can treat you, for a fee. Normally I'd just be the base's medical officer, but my other duties say otherwise."
    (Linda Schuler's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "What services can you perform?"
Linda Schuler: "We have equipment here to treat most physical injuries - lacerations, broken bones, that sort of thing. We also carry a full supply of antitoxins. You may have noticed the Bark Scorpions up above. Though tiny, their venom packs quite a punch. Treating scorpion stings is my most common procedure. I can also treat any form of radiation sickness you pick up out in the waste, no matter what stage, save the last."
    (Linda Schuler's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "You mentioned other duties you had?"
Linda Schuler: "I'm this bunker's Head Scribe in everything but name. I supervise the research teams. I collate the reports. I attend the meetings. But for reasons beyond me, that buffoon Taggart still gets the title. And don't get me started on that little pet of his. Everyone around here knows what's going on there but her."
    (Linda Schuler's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "Was Initiate Watkins the "pet" you were referring to earlier?"
Linda Schuler: "She's cute, isn't she? Like a puppy, almost. Unfortunately, our Head Scribe's intentions toward her aren't quite so innocent."
    (Linda Schuler's dialogue)
  5. The Courier: "Why not tell on him?"
Linda Schuler: "Oh, I tried. The elder listened patiently to my carefully constructed argument regarding why that buffoon should lose his position. Then he just as patiently explained to me that Taggart's work was vital to our cause, and that he wasn't to be trifled with "lesser matters." But vital to our cause? Hardly."
    (Linda Schuler's dialogue)
