James Madison (March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836) was an American statesman, political theorist and the fourth President of the United States of America from 1809–1817.

James Madison is considered the "Father of the Constitution" for his influence in both drafting it in 1787, in addition to writing several dozen treatises with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay in 1788 collectively known as the The Federalist Papers, which were used to drum up support for the ratification of the Constitution.

Following its ratification, Madison was instrumental in drafting the first ten amendments to the Constitution, which later became known as the Bill of Rights. He also worked closely with President George Washington to organize this new experiment of federal government.

As Thomas Jefferson's Secretary of State (1801—1809), Madison supervised the Louisiana Purchase, a region which doubled the size of the United States. Following Secretary of State, he was elected to the presidency and presided from 1809 to 1817, during which diplomatic ties with and a trade embargo against Great Britain led to the War of 1812.
