The gold bar is a miscellaneous item in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on, Dead Money.

Background[]

An ingot of refined gold in the 400-troy-ounce Good Delivery standard, the golden bars were stored by Frederick Sinclair in the Sierra Madre vault as an investment. Normally, they'd be used by professional bullion dealers and banks for storage.[1]

Characteristics[]

At 35 pounds, it is the heaviest item second only to the wood chipper (which is 50 pounds). However, the gold bar is much more valuable at 10,539 caps. The total weight of the 37 gold bars combined is 1,295, but the highest possible carry weight that can be reached by normal means is 375 (10 Strength, the Strong Back, Burden to Bear perk, and the Hoarder trait). This means that a maximum of 10 of the 37 bars can be taken without the player becoming Over-encumbered.

Locations[]

You can find 37 gold bars in the Sierra Madre Vault: 36 on a table to your right as you open the vault door together with some pre-War money, and the another on the desk near the vault control terminal. The vault is only accessible only during the quest Heist of the Centuries. Due to their tremendous weight and the script of the final quest-line, it is difficult, but possible, to retrieve them all.

If you have both ranks of the Implant GRX perk from Old World Blues and Travel Light, this is much easier as you can simply run to the exit in time. This is even easier with Chemist and Day Tripper since they increase the duration of each Turbo. There is one part on the stairs out that is a little bit difficult, when you would normally jump onto the stairs from the catwalk below, but if you look at the ground as you walk onto it from the corner, you will walk right up.

Notes[]

  • The texture is erroneous, as the bars are intended to be the classic gold bar in the Good Delivery standard.[1]
  • A gold bar cannot be moved with the "grab" command when dropped.
  • Despite their large base value at first glance, gold bars work out to be only worth little more than 300 caps per pound and 21 caps per troy ounce.

  1. 1.0 1.1 J.E. Sawyer: A question about your New Vegas mod: I saw you modified the gold price to something significantly less. Did you also change the weight to something more realistic? Gold is heavy, but they should weigh about a pound according to the text on the gold model.
We wanted the individual bars to be heavy, closer to the Good Delivery standard of 400 troy oz. / 12.4kg / 27 lbs. Ours are 35 lbs. to make them more difficult to remove.
Either way, the size of the model is close to the Good Delivery standard, the classic big ol' bar of gold, so the text on the texture is inaccurate.
