Food refers to a class of consumables in the Fallout series that usually heals a small number of Hit Points or gives temporary statistic boosts but has no major drawbacks. Originally, the developers planned to implement a system requiring the player to eat. The idea was scrapped, but food was not removed from the game. The idea was then returned in Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4 in the form of Hardcore mode and Survival difficulty respectively. For some reason, packaged foods, like Salisbury Steak, don't go moldy. This is possibly due to Pre-War technology.
