Take the leap... enjoy a Quantum!

Nuka-Cola Quantum slogan, Fallout 3

Nuka-Cola Quantum is a consumable item in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Main article: Nuka-Cola

The unique taste of Nuka-Cola is the result of a combination of seventeen fruit essences, balanced to enhance the classic cola flavor.[1][2] The balance is precarious and minute adjustments can affect it severely. Such was the case when the freshly launched Nuka-Cola was reformulated in response to the Great Passion Fruit Famine of 2044 and consumers noticed the change in flavor.[3]

Nuka-Cola contains excessive amounts of caffeine and 120% of the recommended daily value of sugar, making it decisively unhealthy for extended consumption.[4] To counter the negative image, it was marketed as being fortified with vitamins, minerals, and "health tonics."[5] Intensive consumption can cause Nuka-Cola addiction, which can lead to splitting headaches if Nuka-Cola isn't consumed on a regular basis.[6] Nuka-Cola Quantum was introduced in 2077, as a brand-new flavor of Nuka-Cola, with twice the calories, twice the carbohydrates, twice the caffeine and twice the taste.[7]

The origins of this soda were unlike anything the Nuka-Cola Corporation had devised before: The Beverageers of Nuka-World were signed over to the Army Research Laboratory's Weapon and Material division to develop biological and chemical weapons for the United States military as part of Project Cobalt. After months and months of work on several isotopes of strontium,[8] the team discovered the isotope strontium-90 that could weaponize anything in the military's arsenal, but could also act as an additive to make a new cola flavor glow, similar to Nuka-Cola Quartz and Victory.[9] In fact, the isotope was so high energy that the beverage it would be added to effectively became sterilized, killing any bacteria with which it came in contact.[10] The designation of the strontium sample, Q4N7-UM, resulted in the isotope being named Quantum by its creator, Rex Meacham.[11]

The isotope was processed into an additive safe for human consumption by another Beverageer, Ruth Leavitt.[12] The Quantum additive was mixed into the new flavor which featured an eighteenth fruit flavor: pomegranate.[13] Of course, using a radioactive additive in a soft drink brought the expected dangers, even with the Beverageer's expertise.[14] Reports in the Arlington, VA Nuka-Cola plant show that product development had not been without failures and casualties.[15] The first few trials of Nuka-Cola Quantum were ultimately fatal, but isotope CCE774 only resulted in dizziness and other mild side effects, allowing it to enter production for limited focus groups on the East Coast.[16] Pilot programs in Washington, D.C. indicated that the new flavor was going to take the market by storm.[17] The Food and Drug Administration did not record any effects that would force a recall, except for one minor side-effect: The isotope in Nuka-Cola Quantum caused the drinker's urine to glow.[18][19]

Characteristics[]

Drinking a Nuka-Cola Quantum will increase your action points by +20 for four minutes and your radiation by +10. Unlike regular Nuka-Cola, it does not provide hit points and there is a 10% chance of becoming addicted to Nuka-Cola Quantum. This is hinted at through the dialogue of Nuka-Cola addict and fanatic, Sierra Petrovita.

When mixed in a tin can with Abraxo cleaner and turpentine, it creates a Nuka-grenade, a "potent cocktail of carbonation and detonation." Sierra Petrovita has also created a recipe for a delicious pastry by mixing Nuka-Cola Quantum with flour and vodka.

Additional locations[]

  • In addition, there is a random encounter on the map in which a traveling salesman will offer to sell a Quantum for 100 caps (or 50 if a Speech or Barter check is passed). This can happen a theoretically unlimited number of times, but he will only sell one Quantum per encounter.
  • Nuka-Cola Quantum can randomly spawn in Nuka-Cola vending machines. When accessing one of the 178 vending machines scattered indoors and outdoors throughout the Wasteland there is approximately a 10% random chance of finding a Nuka-Cola Quantum. The contents of a Nuka-Cola vending machine load the first time you enter a cell and never reset.
  • With the Quantum Chemist perk added by the Broken Steel add-on, every 10 normal Nuka-Colas that you have in your inventory automatically become one bottle of Quantum. Since Nuka-Cola respawns in several shops, with this perk the Quantum count is theoretically raised to an infinite amount.

Quantum comparison

Regular Nuka-Cola and Nuka-Cola Quantum bottles with HDR on (left) and off (right)

  • The Nuka-Cola Quantums in the panic room and the trapper's shack are both half-sized bottles.
  • Nuka-Cola Quantum will never get "ice cold" by being stored in your pristine Nuka-Cola machine.
  • Both Ronald Laren and Sierra Petrovita mention that consumption of Nuka-Cola Quantum will cause one's urine to glow, and if you complete The Nuka-Cola Challenge, Three Dog will also comment on its excretory effects on Galaxy News Radio.
  • The Nuka-Cola plant terminals tell the story of the final months of the plant, including Quantum's advertising campaign, production, release and distribution. The entries list three locations where Quantum was to be test marketed, and two of these three: Paradise Falls and Chaste Acres Dairy Farm, where the Old Olney shipment truck broke down, are the largest caches of Quantum in the game.
  • Unfortunately for the owners of the PC version running either on lower-end computers or users who have turned down effects as a precaution for crashing, the rendering of the blue glow of Nuka-Cola Quantum is not clear unless HDR is on. A comparison can be seen to the right.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Nuka-Cola is an obvious reference to Coca-Cola and its global presence. John-Caleb Bradberton's name is a portmanteau, referencing John Pemberton and Caleb Bradham, inventors of Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola respectively.
  • An actual bottle of Nuka-Cola was distributed to attendees at the 2008 E3 fair, as a promotional item. Its design did not mimic the one available in the game.
  • Bottles of Nuka-Cola Quantum were distributed at various Targets in 2015 in preparation for Fallout 4's release. The design did not mimic the ones seen in-game.
  • In 2018, Nuka-Cola Dark went on sale in large bottles mimicking the ones seen in Nuka-World, unfortunately, the bottle was merely a prop casing for the actual alcohol, contained in a smaller bottle inside the prop.
  • Nuka-Cola Quantum's proposed slogan "Take the leap... enjoy a Quantum!" is a pun dealing with the scientific term "quantum leap", which refers to the phenomenon where an electron nearly instantaneously (within a few nanoseconds - one second is equal to 109 nanoseconds) leaps from one energy level, or quantum state, to another.
  • Nuka-Cola Quantum may be a reference to the short lived Coca-Cola C2 which was advertised as having "half the carbohydrates, sugars and calories" of regular Coca-Cola, an almost opposite of Quantum's advertisement of "twice the calories, twice the carbohydrates, twice the caffeine and twice the taste" of regular Nuka-Cola. Another possible reference is to Jolt Cola, a soft drink first bottled in 1985 whose unrepentant slogan was "All the sugar and twice the caffeine!"

Nuka-Cola began its journey in the year 2042 when our founder, John-Caleb Bradberton, was a budding chemist. He dreamt of a delicious soft drink that would provide energy, focus and 120% of the recommended daily value of sugar!
It took almost two years to perfect the formula, but in late 2044, Mr. Bradberton was finally successful and Nuka-Cola was born! It quickly surpassed other, lesser beverages to become America's number-one favorite soft drink. Not one to rest on his laurels, Mr. Bradberton and his team of talented "Beverageers" continued to create new and exciting formulas.

Here in the bottling chamber, we carefully pour each delicious liquid into our new, space-age rocket bottles! Each bottle is carbonated and then sealed with one of our signature bottle caps.
And now for a special surprise, this is where we produce the newest member of our family, Nuka-Cola Quantum! That blue glow isn't just for show, folks! Quantum contains a top-secret additive to give you a "nuclear" boost of energy!
