Overview[]

Reputation in Fallout: New Vegas is a way to measure how major factions and settlements feel about the player character, like in Fallout 2. Unlike that game, the reputation scale is more intricate, while specific reputation levels will bring certain advantages and disadvantages for the player character.

The reputation system in New Vegas is composed of two scales, measuring the amount of points accumulated as positive reputation (Fame) and negative reputation (Infamy), denoted in game mechanics and console as 1 and 0 respectively.

Points are accumulated by various means. Completing quests, helping people and generally making oneself useful will result in accumulating positive reputation points. Negative reputation can be earned by killing people affiliated with a given faction or town openly (+30 infamy points each time), being caught stealing (+2 infamy) or (rarely) completing quests for the opposite side. Each action that gains fame or infamy is assigned a set value in the editor, which is added via script:

Reputation Bump Breakdown Points Breakdown
Bump Type Very Minor Minor Average Major Very Major
Editor Integer 1 2 3 4 5
Reputation Change 1 2 4 7 12
Example: a script that says player.addreputation 001558e6 1 5 would result in a very major reputation bump, adding 12 points of fame and instantly promoting the player an entire reputation level.

The player character's standing with a given faction is a measure of both his positive and negative reputation, in accordance with this table (green means positive attitude, red negative, black neutral):

Positive Reputation ("Fame")
Level 0 Level 1 Level 2 Level 3
Negative Reputation
("Infamy")
Level 0 Neutral Accepted Liked Idolized
Level 1 Shunned Mixed Smiling Troublemaker Good-Natured Rascal
Level 2 Hated Sneering Punk Unpredictable Dark Hero
Level 3 Vilified Merciful Thug Soft-Hearted Devil Wild Child

As seen in the above table, the scales are divided into four distinct levels each. As the number of accumulated points reaches a certain threshold on either (different for each faction and town), the player's status changes.

Having a specific reputation may result in any number of events. High positive reputations will result in the player being given discounts, gear, access to faction-specific safehouses and more. High negative reputations may result in being denied service, visited by death squads or even attacked on sight. Mixed reputations are tricky and may result in unique quest outcomes or dialogue options. The game typically uses thresholds (GetReputationThreshold) to identify reactions.

Thresholds
GECK Integer 1 2 3 4 5 6
Positive Neutral Smiling Troublemaker Good-Natured Rascal Accepted Liked Idolized
Negative Neutral Sneering Punk Merciful Thug Shunned Hated Vilified
Mixed Neutral Soft-Hearted Devil Unpredictable Dark Hero Wild Child

With the exception of the White Glove Society, Great Khans and Powder Gangers in Vault 19 all factions will attack a player with a significant negative reputation.

Resetting reputation[]

There is no way (unless you are using console commands on PC) to remove reputation points from either scale, except for the NCR and the Legion:

  • visiting Mr House will trigger an invitation to Ambassador Crocker, clearing the negative reputation pool for the NCR,
  • confronting Benny will trigger an invitation to Caesar and clear the negative reputation pool for the Legion.

It is possible to temporarily remove one's current reputation by putting on a disguise (faction-specific clothing, like the NCR trooper armor or Legion prime armor). A disguise will set the player character's standing with the respective faction to "neutral," ignoring any positive or negative points accumulated. Such a disguise will only work on common members of that faction; officers, security guards and dogs will be able to see through it. The second caveat is that any faction hostile to that associated with the currently worn disguise will also be hostile towards the player.

Reputations[]

Foreword[]

  • The reputations are listed below in alphabetic order.
  • Disguises are only available for the five big factions (Brotherhood, Legion, Khans, NCR, and Powder Gangers) and, as such, only mask the standing with those five factions. Other reputations are unaffected.
  • White Glove Society attire is special, since it masks reputations with six factions; the five mentioned above and the Society.

Gaining reputation points[]

Positive[]

  • Cooperate with Mortimer in his plans (+12).
  • Expose Mortimer and talk to Marjorie (+12).
  • Frame Heck Gunderson for the murder of his son (+12).
  • Lie to Heck Gunderson about who took Ted Gunderson when taking him back to Heck (+12).
  • Convince Heck Gunderson against cutting off the food supply to the Strip (+12).
  • Complete Beyond the Beef by listening to Mortimer (+12).

Negative[]

  • Telling Marjorie that the player "eat[s] people, too" (-1).
  • Completing Beyond the Beef by tattling on the White Glove Society to Heck Gunderson. (-12)
  • Convince Heck Gunderson to blockade meat deliveries to the Strip (-12).

Notes[]

  • If Boone or Arcade Gannon refuse to join due to positive reputation with Caesar's Legion, changing into any disguise will change that reputation to neutral. This will open a new dialogue option that allows the player to recruit Boone or Arcade Gannon with a promise not to aid the Legion again.
  • Killing members of any faction from a [HIDDEN] state will not cause the player to gain infamy, if the weapon is silent and a one hit kill is achieved. However the only way to kill a member of the Brotherhood of Steel without gaining infamy or bad karma is to use the Mister Sandman perk while hidden, the brotherhood will always notice if you kill another member even with a silenced weapon is used while hidden and it is one hit kill.
  • Wearing faction armor can be used to kill members of an opposing faction without gaining infamy with that faction. For example, if the player wears Legion armor and kills an NCR soldier, infamy will not be gained.

Bugs[]

  • It is possible for the game to not register taking off faction armor properly when switching directly to another piece of armor. Putting on any kind of faction armor and taking it off again usually restores the players faction standing. Even if it displays the message, "You are no longer dressed as a member of..." when removing faction armor it may not register correctly.
  • If the game manages to load a Powder Ganger while the player character has neutral or negative reputation, then that non-player character will permanently remain hostile, even if they respawn and the player character later gains positive reputation. Additionally, the Powder Gangers at Whittaker Farmstead will be hostile regardless of your Powder Ganger reputation; however, killing them does not seem to affect your reputation.
