Overview[]

An implant is a medical device manufactured to enhance the existing biological structure of a person, which are surgically implanted into the patient's body by means of an Auto-Doc or a qualified medical practitioner. Small implant operations only takes a few minutes and leaves no scar and other visible signs.

The majority of physical implants behave in the same manner as the Intense Training perk, permanently raising a single statistic by one. Although implants that increase SPECIAL stats can be purchased when a statistic is at 10, they will confer no benefit.

Implants are available from Doctor Usanagi, a Followers of the Apocalypse doctor who heads the New Vegas Medical Clinic just outside New Vegas. Other implants are also available from the Sink Auto-Doc in Big MT, with the addition of Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.

The total maximum number of implants that can be installed by Dr. Usanagi is equal to the player's main Endurance level. Increasing the players Endurance from drugs, apparel, or the Endurance implant itself, has no effect on increasing the maximum number of implants the player can have installed. However, raising Endurance via the Intense Training perk does allow for a single additional implant to be installed. Additionally, only one of each type of implant can be taken during any single play through of the game.

Implants installed by the Sink Auto-Doc don't respect or count towards this limit and are considered separate in terms of game mechanics.

Since the effects of implants that increase SPECIAL statics are counted as a permanent increase to the respective static, they will also affect the perks available to the player.

Notes[]

  • A starting Endurance of 9 will guarantee you the ability to get every implant. An Endurance of 7 will allow you to get all SPECIAL increasing implants.
  • In normal mode, the PHOENIX Monocyte Breeder can effectively replace the need to sleep in order to regain health. Waiting will restore 12 HP an hour, or 288 HP in 24 hours, meaning it will often only take a single day of waiting to restore health. It also restores health during fast travel.
  • If the player has a INT stat of 3 or below, Usanagi will offer the implant for a reduced price.
  • Purchasing implants from Doctor Usanagi is an unmarked quest, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger in Fallout: New Vegas. The name is likely a reference to the TV show The Six Million Dollar Man.
