The shit's about to hit the fan in this cesspool, and I don't think I can stop them.

— Evan King, Fallout 3.

Evan King is the mayor of Arefu, and its only defender in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Evan King was born in 2222, and lived in Arefu all of his life, watching the settlement shrink from 30 people, to just five. A lifetime of combat experience has made him a competent fighter and strategist. In fact, the idea to collapse the northern segments of the highway bridge on which Arefu rests was his idea, limiting possible entry points to just one.[1]

King is skilled in explosives, and does not hesitate to shoot any prospective attackers, although he is spoken of rather disparagingly by the town's residents, who heavily criticize his inaction with the recent raids The Family has carried out on Arefu.

Blood Ties

Quests[]

  • Blood Ties: When the Lone Wanderer arrives at Arefu to deliver Lucy West's letter, King will preemptively attack by remotely detonating a nearby grenade. However, this was done just as a warning, and he calls the Lone Wanderer over to him immediately afterwards. After conversing, he will ask the Lone Wanderer to check on the locals, and make sure that they are safe. Upon returning to him with news of the West's violent deaths, he will send the Lone Wanderer to search for Ian West, who was taken away by The Family. Should Ian be returned to Arefu, and a deal with The Family is made to protect the town, Evan will allow the Lone Wanderer to make use of the weapons he has stored in his home.
  • If the Lone Wanderer had destroyed Megaton before completing the quest Blood Ties, King will give the quest instead of Lucy West, although the speech options with Ian are identical to as if Lucy was still alive.

Effects of player actions[]

Upon completion of the Blood Ties quest, there will be an extra dialogue option while talking to Evan King. If the Lone Wanderer choose this option, King will give them a random alcoholic drink for free, which can be repeated as many time as liked.

Notes[]

  • Inside of King's house (requires level 50 lockpick to break in), the Lone Wanderer can find the repair bobblehead. While there is no karma lost for breaking in, it is still considered trespassing while inside.
  • King does not carry a copy of a key to his own house, unless he is actually in his house, which can be achieved by having Alan guard Arefu.
  • King is referred to as a "...spineless wimp..." by Karen Schenzy.

Appearances[]

King appears only in Fallout 3.

Bugs[]

  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360 It is possible for King to walk into one of the holes in the bridge, thus turning all of the residents of Arefu hostile towards the Lone Wanderer.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3 Xbox 360Icon xbox360 When returning to Arefu, sometimes there will be a creature attacking King. If the creature kills him, the quest will fail, and all of the residents of Arefu will turn hostile.

Evan has lived on this island all of his 55 years. He's watched the settlement shrink from 30 people down to its current population of merely 5. He is still responsible for the small settlement and is very careful whenever a stranger enters his domain. He is quite experienced in combat, having repelled attacks by Raiders, Slavers, and various creatures. To maintain Arefu's security, he had the northern bridge span destroyed and feels safer having to monitor only the southern approach."
