ED-E (pronounced Eddie) is a companion found in the Divide in 2281.

Background[]

This ED-E is a copy of the original ED-E Duraframe eyebot, manufactured by the Hopeville missile silo bunker's automatic engineering facilities.[1][2] The necessary information was obtained by remote scanning the eyebot.[3][4]

At first glance the Courier mistakes the robot with ED-E, who plays music from the TV show "Ralphie". The Courier can decipher the beeps and garble and realizes that the silo has "pretty advanced engineering capabilities" since it was able to remote-scan ED-E as it passed through The Divide and create copies to maintain the facility.

ED-E contains the codes which Ulysses needs to activate the remaining nuclear warheads at the Divide, allowing him to unleash destruction on the Mojave Wasteland. Being a direct copy of the ED-E found in Primm, it has a unique personality and all of the original's memories up to the time it passed through the Divide, which it shares with the Courier at various points.

Upon joining the Courier's party, ED-E starts playing a log from its original creator, Dr. Whitley, and continues doing so at certain "checkpoints" during the journey through the Divide. Ulysses also uses ED-E to communicate to the Courier throughout their journey through the Divide.

ED-E shows that it regrets leaving Dr. Whitley and is saddened by the fact, but is determined to complete its mission, where he will have to "fly far, fly fast", just like Ralphie. It expresses these through encrypted audio logs it has stored away:

Whitley: Experiment log 369248/B - Eyebot Duraframe universal interface override system. This is Dr. Whitley presiding. We've boosted signal gain and enlarged the overflow buffer system. That should ensure 100% connectivity and control. ED-E, whenever you're ready.
ED-E: <Electronic sounds>
Whitley: Yes! Success! Um, reporting full success on 369248/B. ED-E was able to interface with and override the test panel in under three seconds. Great job, team. Now, let's start on the proposal for the full rollout.

ED-E: <Distressed beeping>
Whitley: Dr. Grant? What the hell do you think you're doing?
Grant: Ah, Whitley, there you are. Orders from Colonel Autumn - he feels the Eyebot Duraframe project isn't advancing quickly enough. I'm to-
Whitley: You didn't even disengage his damage-avoidance protocols! You're hurting him!
Grant: Don't be ridiculous, it's just a machine. See here, I've already increased the navigation system's efficiency by 65%.
Whitley: Get the hell out of here!
Grant: Fine, Whitley, it's your lab. At least until I tell the Colonel about this.

TranscriptVaultBoy

I don't believe it! Grant actually went to Colonel Autumn and got approval for her damned "efficiency guidelines!" "All experiments will be carried out with the test subject fully active, to reduce iteration time." It's barbaric! I've explained this to the Colonel - just because the Eyebots don't have true AI doesn't mean they're just machines. I guess results are all that matter around here. Forget things like "ethical procedures" or "humane treatment." I'm starting to have serious misgivings about leadership around here. At least I've got you to talk to, huh ED-E?

TranscriptVaultBoy

Whitley: All due respect sir, I think you're making a mistake. We're close to a breakthrough with the Duraframe Eyebots, I can feel it! Yes, sir. Yes sir, I understand that we need the Duraframe assets for Hellfire armor, but-No, sir. Yes, sir. I understand, sir. I'll tell the team to start disassembling the ED series prototypes right away. ED-E, you little rascal. Were you eavesdropping again? I think those videos you watch are a bad influence on you. How much of that did you hear?
ED-E: <Sad beeping>
Whitley: Hmm... didn't Dr. Grant say she'd upgraded your navigational systems? I think I have an idea.... How'd you like to be just like RALPHIE?

TranscriptVaultBoy

Whitley: Good, you're back on-line. Listen to me, ED-E - if you stay here, they'll dismantle you for parts. You have to go now. I've uploaded destination coordinates for our outpost in Navarro into your system. I want you to go to the Enclave there, okay? Do you understand me? It's going to be a long journey, my little friend. You'll have to fly very far, and fly very fast. Can you do that?
ED-E: <Sad beeping>
Whitley: I know you can. Be careful out there, ED-E. Maybe I'll see you again some day.

TranscriptVaultBoy

Experiment log 369248/A - Eyebot Duraframe universal interface override system. This is Dr. Whitley presiding. Initial tests of the override system are promising. Against unsecured or lightly-encrypted targets, the Eyebots have a 98% success rate. More heavily protected systems are still problematic. Military-grade encryption presents a very real possibility of critical overload of key systems. We've stopped tests before any robots were destroyed, but if we don't address the problem our Eyebots will fry themselves hacking military networks. ED-E? What are you doing in here all alone? And who left these old videos playing? Come on, let's get you into your recharge bay.

Tommy: Dad! Hey Dad! Check out this robot I found!
The Dad: Careful, Tommy - I've never seen a robot like that before. It might be dangerous.
Tommy: He's not dangerous! Look, he's hurt! Can we take him home, Dad? Maybe Mom can fix him!
The Dad: I don't know, son... what if someone comes looking for it?
Tommy: Please? He looks so lonely! Maybe if Mom fixes him, he can help her out around the garage?
The Dad: All right, boy. But if he breaks anything, it's coming out of your allowance!
Tommy: Yay! He'll be just like RALPHIE, only this one's not a toy!

Notes[]

  • ED-E is one of the few characters to stay marked as essential in Hardcore mode, because if he died, The Courier (quest) would become impossible to complete.
  • Bug or not, immediately after you repair the original ED-E in Primm, you can have access to his workbench and reloading bench even if you haven't visited Lonesome Road at all.
  • After you open the silo blast door control, sometimes ED-E can get stuck in the ceiling around the stairs near the rocket.
  • If you turn on the General Subtitles, ED-E's ending (composed of beeps) will be interpreted for you on the screen. The subtitles also translate in-game beeps such as '*Sneaky beeping*' when entering sneak mode or '*Excited beeping*' when encountering a Ralphie poster.
  • One of ED-E's recorded messages explains what happens in the Fallout: New Vegas trailer.

Bugs[]

  • PCIcon pc ED-E may not wait when told to, at first it may stay in place for awhile but will suddenly appear again, without warning, following you.

Appearances[]

This copy of ED-E appears only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Lonesome Road.

Seeing it end changed me, too."
