Huh? Oh, lots. More than any other Fiend - hundreds, maybe. Wham, bam, "oh god, my brains, you hit me in my brains." Easy as that.

— Nephi on the number of killed NCR citizens

Driver Nephi is a leading member of the Fiends, living in the southwest corner of the Fiend compound around the South Vegas Ruins East Entrance in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

This Fiend was not always a drug-addicted psychopath bent on caving in skulls with a golf driver. He was a New Canaan Mormon,[1] friend of Elder Bert Gunnarsson. However, he fell in with a bad crowd: drug runners, raiders and worse, developed an addiction to chems and quite rapidly fell down the society's ladder, hitting every rung on the way down. His gang moved into the Mojave area from Utah about six months ago.[2][3] Despite the relatively short time frame, Nephi "distinguished" himself as a particularly mean bastard, incredibly fast, tough to kill and utterly relentless with his golf club (or driver, which also gave him his nickname).

Due to Nephi's kill-count and status as a fiend leader (or the closest they have to one), Nephi is on Major Dhatri's hit list. Dhatri states that the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion had previously been sent to kill Nephi, but proved unsuccessful after multiple attempts, as Nephi tends to use his own men as meat-shields to protect himself, and is also tough enough to have managed to survive despite 1st Recon snipers having managed to land at least a couple confirmed shots on him.

Location[]

Driver Nephi can be found alongside six other Fiends in a burned-out building north of the Samson Rock Crushing Plant, and south of the South Vegas Ruins East Entrance.

Notes[]

  • Driver Nephi has a handful of unused dialogue topics in the GECK, in which the player can ask him basic questions about himself, his golf club, Violet, and Cook-Cook. This dialogue also reveals that Nephi is from Utah, and was once a friend of Bert Gunnarsson and a member of the Mormon Church before he fell under the influence of the Fiends and became Driver Nephi.
  • This implies his name is a reference to Nephi, a prophet of the Book of Mormon, and author of its first two books. If this is the case, Major Dhatri incorrectly pronounces his name with an emphasis on the I, rather than on the E.
  • Driver Nephi's headless corpse will not disappear as a regular fiend's corpse will.
  • Driver Nephi and Cook-Cook use the same character skin.
  • He is nicknamed for the unique golf club he carries with him into battle: Nephi's Golf Driver.

Appearances[]

Driver Nephi appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Driver Nephi's name may be a reference to Nephi (pronounced /ˈniːfaɪ/) which is the name of four prominent individuals in the Book of Mormon, the religious text read by the Mormons, and also the name of a city in Juab County, Utah. This may further suggest Driver Nephi's affiliation with the Mormons at New Canaan (mentioned in the cut dialogue found in the GECK).
  • Driver Nephi's dialog was unknowingly cut from the game.[4]
  • "Who the fuck are you and why are you bothering me?"

  • "Back again? Jesus."

    • "Who are you?" (The Courier)
  • "Name's Nephi, friend. Driver Nephi. Pleasure to meet you."

noicon

    • "It is? Really?" (The Courier)
  • "No, you fucking dolt! Why the hell would it be a pleasure?!"

noicon

    • "That's a nice club you've got there," (The Courier)
  • "Fuckin' A right it is. This baby's my life, my love, my strong right arm. Killed a lot of fuckers with this hunk of iron, yessir.""

noicon

    • "Can you tell me about Cook-Cook and Violet?" (The Courier)
  • "[Male] I *could.* I'm not terribly inclined to, though. If you go talk to them, they might kill you and rob me of the fun."

noicon

  • "[Female] Really? Listen... you don't want to mess with Cook-Cook. And you *realy* don't want to let him get you alone. Trust me."

noicon

    • "How many NCR citizens you figure you've killed with that club?" (The Courier)
  • "Huh? Oh, lots. More than any other Fiend - hundreds, maybe. Wham, bam, "oh god my brains, you hit me in my brains." Easy as that."

noicon

    • "I heard you came from Utah. A friend of yours asked me to check on you. Bert?" (The Courier)
  • "Bert? That scaly, corpse-looking fuck, you tell him I'm never going back to his little cult!"

noicon

    • "Okay, I'll tell him." (The Courier)
  • "And get the fuck away from me before I cave in your skull."

noicon

    • "Goodbye." (The Courier)
  • "Get fucked."

Bugs[]

  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360 Driver Nephi is not marked as a respawning non-player character in the GECK, but scripting issues may rarely cause him to respawn some time after killing him.
