Where is Master? Did he go away? Dog will be good this time.
”— DogNo... no, the world's always got another cage, waiting, keeping everything you want... just out of reach.
”— GodDog is a psychologically disturbed nightkin who helps Father Elijah by capturing "assistants" for him and fitting them with explosive collars. His alternate personality, God (referred to by the former as simply "the voice"), is trying to break Dog free of Elijah's grasp.
The "Dog" personality is activated by the sound of Father Elijah's voice, and the "God" personality is activated by the sound of his own voice (via holotape or radio). When one personality is dominant, the other is said to be in "the cage" or "the basement".
Background[]
Prologue[]
The origins of Dog/God (let alone his actual name) prior to Unity are unknown. What is known is that he was a member of the Master's elite Nightkin. Like the rest of the mutant army he was psychically linked to the Master and conditioned to slavishly serve him until death. Its several dominant personalities controlling his every action. With the destruction of the Mariposa Military Base, then the Cathedral,[1] and the subsequent loss of connection to the commanders his grip on reality broke and the two personalities would emerge.[2][3]
The one personality is Dog. The slavish, childlike character of pure instinct. Built from the conditioning the Master bred its army with. The other God, the subconscious voice of reason. As the years went by the Dog personality would constantly get into trouble. Wandering, eating, and listening to those he shouldn't. His ravenous hunger can only be described as gluttonous. Once he started to feed, anyone and anything that Dog hunted would be crushed, mangled and twisted until he is satiated. An act of uncontrolled greed. He knew that he was doing wrong but simply could't help himself.[4] Eventually the voice of reason couldn't stand the constant self imperilment, nor the cannibalism, and began to emerge to counter Dog. Dog in response began self mutilation. Eventually going so far as to carve the name Elijah gave him on his chest to remind himself who he is. The pain serving to stifle the "other voice."[5][6] However as time passed the other voice became stronger and stronger, consequently it took more and more pain to stifle the God personality.[3]
Dog's hunger would always drive him to the surface when the hunger was satiated and/or fatigue set in God would emerge. While Dog is unaware that the God personality is actually a part of him, he refers to the personality as climbing into his head and constantly being mean to him. Misinterpreting God's attempt at protecting him from harm by locking Dog in places. Despite this God continues to try to protect Dog, seeing him as his younger sibling. Both personalities would grow to resent the suppression of the other being in control. Each referring to the other putting them in the cage, or the basement.[3][7] While in the cage each personality would only perceive glimpses of the others actions. This has had the effect of allowing the personalities to keep secrets from each other. This however is both a "gift" and a curse, for while it helps keep strategic ignorance it only exacerbates the animosity between the two.
Although God likes to think that he was the original personality he is completely unsure. For while he is in control he both refers to the body as a "shell" and that it is hard to fight in. Perhaps a consequence of God being the culmination of the self preservation and reasoning instincts. Calm, articulate, and controlling God seeks to eliminate Elijah to free himself from the need for a master and to eliminate his greedy ravenous hunger.[8][6][9] In contrast Dog seeks to eliminate the God personality so that he may become pure instinct, and gorge on his master's affection and to his contentment on food. As such God has developed a furvored hatred for greed, one that neither could hide the bloodlust. Whether it's Elijah's, Dean Domino's, or the Courier's.[5][10]
Act I – The Master Elijah[]
As this internal struggle was festering the Dog personality discovered the Sierra Madre broadcast over the radio. Believing it to be another voice – believing in all voices over the radio, one that promised to "Begin Again" in a calming, reassuring, and soothing voice he followed. It was at the time Dog found the Madre that he and the God truly began to wrestle for control, and the furthest point in the Dog personality's clear memory.[8]
It was in this state that he encountered Elijah. A mad, rambling wreck blinded and embittered by failure, age, arrogance, and his own greed. Seeing the relatively docile mutant more like a mule that needs training to be his beast of burden. In his contempt for his kind Elijah wrote off the absolute obedience to this new domineering personality as just a side effect of the FEV. Dismissing the creature, his knowledge of the FEV, and ignoring the danger with his sense of superiority.[11][12]
When Dog/God was first commanded by Elijah the conditioning by the Master kicked in. Revering Elijah as "the Master" he embraced him without question. In his arrogance Elijah named this creature "Dog," his new beast of burden to train as his tool.[13][14] The reason personality however saw Elijah as a truly menacing threat and hid away. Taking advantage of said arrogance, and possible ignorance of him being a nightkin, to wait for the right time to wrestle control from both parties.
With Elijah unable to unlock the secrets of the casino's vault alone, he used his explosive collars to press captives into his service. Setting multiple man-traps at multiple locations in and around the Sierra Madre to capture fortune seekers, using the broadcast as bait. However the process was trial and error, as the multiple teams succumb to their Human nature as soon as they became close to the treasure. Inevitably turning on one another, believing that they all could take it for themselves.[15] One team managed to trigger the Gala Event for the second time, getting Elijah into the heart of the casino. In the process Dog, at his post at the switching station cage, was frightened by the loud noises and bright lights. Because of this he accidentally tore apart the woman that helped him. The trauma and remorse causing Dog to try and suppress the memory.[16] However as soon as Elijah made his way inside the casino sealed up, trapping him inside. Alone. With the casino's construction preventing him from contacting and controlling what was left of his team. Subsequently the collars unhooked, allowing an opportunity to escape. This is when Dog took control, with the collar off his hunger took control. He proceeded to hunt down any food and gorge himself. Ghost people and his former team alike. When he caught one of the latter he tore through the flesh with such voraciousness that he consumed the segmented collar around their neck. God later commenting how it looked like metallic radscorpions... attached to warm, red, neck flesh.[4]

Notes[]
- Dog is set to level as the player does, and will reach a maximum level of 45 depending on the order in which each add-on is completed (Dead Money being completed last/close to last). God also levels with the player, but has no maximum allowed level, and also has no minimum level either. Because of this, Dog has an extremely high amount of hit points at very high levels, more than any other enemy in the game other than the legendary bloatfly or X-42 giant robo-scorpion. This, combined with his innate 30% DR, can make him a very powerful opponent if the player is forced to fight him towards the end of Dead Money.
- God is actually larger than Dog, set to a scale of 1, whereas Dog is set to a scale of 0.9. Like Lily Bowen, Dog and God are noticeably shorter than a normal super mutant, although they still stand a head taller than a normal human.
- Dog and God have different combat-related personal perks. Dog has the typical nightkin's 30% damage resistance, while God's health regenerates over time.
- Dog knows the exact sweet spot to hit in order to kill the ghost people, and can give the player the Ghost Hunter perk.
- He will occasionally refer to the Mariposa Military Base and the Cathedral in idle dialogue, stating that he misses the base and the church.
- If the player has the Cannibal perk, he can be asked what the ghost people taste like. God will say that they "taste like copper".
- Dog/God has a unique face, a unique body appearance and a unique voice compared to other nightkin.
- God will engage Dean Domino in conversation while they are both dismissed to the Villa fountain by the Courier. He is apparently familiar with Dean and expresses contempt for the ghoul for not leaving the Sierra Madre when he had the opportunity.
The following is based on the Wild Wasteland trait and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
- If the player has the Wild Wasteland trait, Dog will say "OM NOM NOM" the first time he eats a ghost person.

The following is based on Fallout New Vegas cut content and has not been confirmed by canon sources. |
- Within the game files exists a unused character named Dog Script Test Dude. It is a generic super mutant used to test some scripts related to Dog/God.

Appearances[]
Dog and God appear only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on, Dead Money.
Behind the scenes[]
- Dog and God's reference art often revolved around Mr. Hyde from Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentleman comic.[17]
Bugs[]
- Salida del Sol north with Dog/God, he will fall through the floor and be suspended underneath it. Sometimes, when clearing out
- Dog/God is prone to getting stuck in walls around the villa and may be unable to follow the player in the same cell.
- Sometimes God/Dog may be unable to heal when administered stimpaks or after combat.
- Sometimes when giving the wait command to God/Dog, he will attack the first ghost person he can find and then wait.
- There is an exploitable bug, where you can obtain God's perk, without him being a companion, by having God as a companion, using Elijah's voice to bring out Dog, and dismissing Dog. This is only temporary, as soon as the player dismisses him at his post for Fires in the Sky, the Courier will lose the perk.

God: "[SUCCEEDED] The "Master" - Elijah... reminds Dog of someone from long ago. His leader, commander. Commanders. The Master was a strong personality... personalities as well. Dog is slavish, was conditioned to serve the Master until death. The Old Man... Elijah merely came along and opened that door in Dog's mind. Now Dog does whatever the Old Man wants."

God: "[SUCCEEDED] Trauma... yes, in a manner of speaking. Do you see these wounds of his, covering his skin...the bear trap on his arm? He placed his own hand in it. The name he carved in his chest? To remind him of who he is, he inflicts pain on himself to silence me, when all I try to do... Hrr! ...he cuts, hurts, and tries to murder me out of him. He won't succeed. Just makes me angrier. Dog is the beast, we simply change cages. Like the ones here."
(Dog and God's dialogue) - ↑ 4.0 4.1 The Courier: "How the hell did you... or whoever... eat one of these collars?"
God: "They... detach. When segmented, they look like nothing more than metallic Radscorpions... and if they're attached to neck flesh, warm, red... Dog doesn't care what's on the body he's crushing in his hands, he'll mangle it, twist it, make it fit until he's full. Dog can't help himself... hungry... greedy. And now the collar's inside, alive again. And we're trapped here until it goes cold."
(Dog and God's dialogue) - ↑ 5.0 5.1 God: "Touched by radiation, and you choose to spend your time here. You could have just left... but you're too obsessed to let go."
Dean Domino: "I used to know a ventriloquist with more skill than you. At least he had the sense to know his own name, without carving it into his chest."
God: "Mirrors tell me my name when needed... and I have a name for you, several. Thief, coward... showman. Radiation couldn't kill the truth, could it."
Dean Domino: "The truth, buddy, is this: you and me, we're now family as long as we got these bowties on. So watch your mouth, you don't scare me."

Dog: "Reminds me, keeps the voice out of my head. He can't talk when the pain's howling at me."
Dean Domino: "Eh... wait, so you're not just slow, you're screwy, too? Some crew we are... we are never getting into the Sierra Madre."
Dog: "Dog is hungry. Tired of your voice... when do we eat?"
Dean Domino: "Don't like the way this guy is looking at me. You better be his leash."
(Dean Domino's and Dog and God's dialogue) Note: VDLC01DeanToDogTopic02 - ↑ The Courier: "What happened to your voice?"
God: "I'm the voice of reason. I sleep sometimes... down in the basement, in the cage. Now that I'm awake, Dog goes back in the cage. Dog knows I'm here, but can't do anything about it. I'm his... conscience. Keep him tame, keep him from hurting us... doing foolish things. I've been trapped in here for some time, then you come along and let me out. So... you opened my cage for a reason. Now... I want to know why."
(Dog and God's dialogue) - ↑ 8.0 8.1 Dean Domino: "Where the hell did you get this one. "Dog?" What, so you don't forget your name?"
Dog: "I don't remember you. Who are you."
Dean Domino: "A little slow, huh? Uh... Dean. Dean Domino. I... live here."
Dog: "You look like food, smell like food. Dog - hungry."
Dean Domino: "All right, pal, you stay in your corner, I'll stay in mine. Do not leave me alone with this thing."
(Dean Domino's and Dog and God's dialogue) Note: VDLC01DeanToDogTopic01 - ↑ Dean Domino: "Stop looking at me, you idiot. I can hear your stomach growling from here, I don't like it."
Dog: "Run from Dog? Dog knows how to hunt. Dog will find you, tear you apart."
Dean Domino: "That a bet you want to take? Cause I'll see that and raise you a few bullets to the skull."
Dog: "Dog's been shot before, many times. Won't stop me from catching you."
Dean Domino: "I hope you've got this one under control, because he's giving me a nasty itch on my trigger finger."
(Dean Domino's and Dog and God's dialogue) Note: VDLC01DeanToDogTopic03 - ↑ God: "You could have left the Sierra Madre. Left this Villa, joined your own kind."
Dean Domino: "Sierra Madre's mine, my heart's right where it belongs."
God: "You can't abide it. There's no heart. You hate it, I can hear it in your words."
Dean Domino: "Sounds like you need your hearing checked. Sierra Madre, it's meant for me."
(Dean Domino's and Dog and God's dialogue) Note: NVDLC01GodToDeanTopic02 - ↑ The Courier: "Any suggestions for who I should get first?"
Elijah: "Yes... Collar 8, the FEV reject, the Super Mutant. He's docile, predictable, and provided he's not starving, should be easy to command. I lost contact with him some time ago... probably after he dragged you here from the trap. Find him, he'll follow you, collar or no."
Elijah's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "What's FEV?"
Elijah: "A long story. FEV... a virus with an even longer story... it gave birth to the docile one, turned him into a Super Mutant long ago."
Elijah's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "If Dog put a collar on me, why didn't he say so?"
Elijah: "Dog? Hnh. Appropriate. It's what I called him. You've met him. You know why he forgot - his brain was ruined by FEV, his memory, wreckage. He may know the way back, somewhere, deep down. I doubt it. He tracks by smell and instinct. Still, he could be trained."
(Elijah's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "We'll head out, then."
Elijah: "I'd suggest taking the FEV reject to his position first... although you may need his brutality and strength elsewhere first. As easy as the Villa was to navigate... the outlying areas of the Villa are far more dangerous, thicker with the Ghost People, traps, and toxins. Use your team as I use you... listen to your collar, watch where you step. You're no use to me dead."
(Elijah's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Why would you do that?"
Elijah: "Because in some respects, breaking in to the Sierra Madre is easier than breaking human instinct. Greed. The Villa is filled with corpses. Some killed by the dangers here, some by me. Others... turned on each other. Once they realized the Sierra Madre could be theirs, they cared nothing for their freedom... their survival... or each other."
The Courier: "Are they all dead?"
Elijah: "The ones brought here live on only in what they've left behind, their marks - graffiti on the walls. And victims they've killed. Some tried to help... left supplies and healing for others who came. Their reward? They were tracked down, killed by others with baser instincts. Some of these murderers went as far as to leave traps behind them... turning markers for help into deathtraps for anyone following them. It killed some of them when they forgot where the traps lay... or when they desperately needed the assistance they had cut others off from."
(Elijah's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "We need to get you to the Gala Event. Get you to your place."
Dog: "Dog... Dog has heard that before. Was there pretty lights? There... were things to pull? Hard to pull, but Dog did. And... a cage. ...and Dog was hungry there. Dog... was someone else there, with Dog. Then... then there was noise, then... lights... and streets... screamed. ...Dog doesn't want to go to cage. It's inside Dog now, Dog can see the cage, hear the noises. The way to casino... it'll hurt you. Inside."
