I'll tell you when we get inside. I know that's a bum deal, but strategic ignorance has saved our organization more times than I can count.

Deacon is an experienced field agent for The Railroad in 2287. Deacon makes up the backbone of the Railroad's operation intelligence, making him an invaluable member of the organization. He is also a potential companion for the Sole Survivor.

Background[]

Surrounded by a thick web of lies and mystery, Deacon is a riddle even to his allies from the Railroad. His primary job is intelligence and subterfuge and thus he tends to lie quite frequently - getting on the nerves of everyone in the organization. He claims that the lies are a complication stemming from his nature: He's one of the first synths the Railroad ever attempted a cranium reboot on and he's a botched job. Not in the sense that his brain was fried, but in the sense that all his memories have been wiped. His past is one, big void. Of course, that's assuming he doesn't simply lie about this fact as well.[1] At another point, he claims that he was one of the original founders of the Railroad, with Desdemona acting as a figurehead. While it may be a false claim, he was responsible for creating an escape plan and getting many Railroad members evacuated when Institute Coursers found their original headquarters in 2273.[2]

Due to his aloof nature, Deacon is essentially a ghost. He has undergone dozens of facial reconstructions (including a stint as a woman and a very disturbing time spent as a ghoul[3]) and has run afoul of gangs across the Commonwealth numerous times. In his own words, he goes under the knife every year or two. New face, new body, all to keep enemies guessing.[4]

The truth is more complicated. Once a violent bigoted youth, he was formerly a member of the University Point Deathclaws, a gang that regularly committed hate crimes against synths or anyone suspected of being synths. Eventually the gang performed a lynching, which shook Deacon to the core and caused him to leave the gang. Eventually becoming a farmer, he fell in love with and married a woman by the name of Barbara. Unfortunately, his past came back to bite him as the Deathclaws somehow learned that Barbara was a synth and killed her. The last thing Deacon remembers was killing most of the Deathclaws and leaving a big impression on them. Soon afterwards he was recruited by the Railroad, who deemed him sympathetic to their cause after seeing his actions.[5]

However, none of the stories he tells the player have any conclusive evidence. With his constant reiteration of the theme: "You can't trust everyone," it's entirely possible that all of Deacon's personal history is entirely fabricated.

[[]] "Another monument. Neat."
[[]] "All these monuments around. Boston must've been real important. Or thought it was, at least."
[[]] "What did people do here? PAM once tried telling me and I still have no idea."
[[]] "What the hell's a TPS report anyway?"
[[]] "Desperation, petty politics, and watercoolers. Joy."
[[]] "So people seriously spent 9-10 hours a day in places like this?"
[[]] "Offices usually are kind of lacking on salvage. Every now and then you get lucky, though."
[[]] "Now we just need a picnic basket."
[[]] "Open space. Fun."
[[]] "Maybe we should get some mirelurk steaks, Nuka-Cola, Fancy Lads, and have a cookout."
[[]] "Must've been nice to hang out here without worrying about being sniped."
[[]] "Do we have to enter the big open spaces? Should I just wear my Bullseye jacket to make it easier for them?"
[[]] "Look at all that rock."
[[]] "Is now a good time to mention I don't like heights. Getting near the edge around here. Ahh."
[[]] "Maybe we should stay away from the ledges here? That'd be good."
[[]] "This is my element. Civilization."
[[]] "If we find people just act like you belong. Works for me."
[[]] "So many little towns all over the place. There must've been thousands of people that lived in the Commonwealth back then."
[[]] "We come across anyone, remember, you do the talking. I can be your mute friend Dingo."
[[]] "I was raised just over there. True story. Lots of fond memories over there by that... uh, thing. Yeah."
[[]] "This is more like it. Limited site lines, debris. Easy to lose yourself here."
[[]] "One day we'll take back this city."
[[]] "Maybe I should change my outfit. I want to be wearing my Sunday best if we meet people, after all."
[[]] "Plenty of good places to go around here. The city's full of people."
[[]] "You know, I happen to be in possession of the deed to a bridge around here. I'll make you a great deal for it."
[[]] "So much junk. So many possibilities."
[[]] "It's a scavvers paradise here."
[[]] "Remember, fill your pockets with all the goodies. Then we can slowly crawl out. Good times."
[[]] "So, what did we learn in school today, Timmy? Nuclear war sucks."
[[]] "So teachers, all they did was teach, right? They didn't farm or run shops or run guns on the side? Wow."
[[]] "I've read a few textbooks. Did everyone seriously learn calculus back then? Were you guys planning for an invasion of math-letes?"
[[]] "Ah, another kiddie prison. 13 year sentences for everyone."
[[]] "Yo ho, ho, right?"
[[]] "Mirelurks and raiders favor hunks of junk like this."
[[]] "After we beat the Institute and free all the synths, we need to take to the seas in an epic adventure. You can have the cool hat."
[[]] "So people used to take tubs like this into the ocean? Crazy."
[[]] "Oh, hello itty bitty world. I feel sick."
[[]] "You know, the ground's a pretty sensible place to be. Right?"
[[]] "Why'd they make this place so tall?"
[[]] "And people lived up here? Were they nuts?"
[[]] "Let's see his selection."
[[]] "I call dibs on any hats. I love a good hat."
[[]] "We have a few friends that own shops. Good luck getting a discount, though."
[[]] "Ooh, sale."
[[]] "See anything cool?"
[[]] "Deep underground, far away from the Watcher's, uh, watching eyes."
[[]] "Every base we've had has been deep underground. PAM says its safer that way."
[[]] "Another fabulous warehouse. Exciting."
[[]] "In a pinch, you can crash in a warehouse for a night."
[[]] "Not a bad place for a rendezvous."
[[]] "Boxes, boxes, everywhere."
[[]] "So much junk."
[[]] "This is nice. True, the water's irradiated and there's probably 'lurks everywhere. But still nice."
[[]] "You got a surf board?"
[[]] "At one time, Tinker hatched a plan to ship synths overseas. For some reason, we went with plan B."

Notes[]

  • Deacon changes his appearance regularly when travelling through the Commonwealth, including his wig. The only constant is his ever-present sunglasses.
  • Deacon appears in several locations in-disguise:
    • Disguised as a Diamond City Security officer, Deacon was present for the argument between Piper and Mayor McDonough.
    • Wanders Goodneighbor as a 'Drifter', and is occasionally seen in one of the Memory Den pods.
    • Sometimes seen at Bunker Hill disguised as a 'Caravan Worker'.
    • West of Vault 111 Is a small post set up with a pair of binoculars, water, and a Railroad Sign meaning: "Ally." It is believed that Deacon set up this post to watch the Sole Survivor.

Notable quotes[]

Brotherhood of Steel
  • "Whatever you do - do not help get Liberty Prime online."
  • "Desdemona - hell *I* - won't take kindly to giving those power armored bigots a super weapon."
  • "Ah, the Brotherhood. Elitism, Power Armor, xenophobia, and racial purging. What's not to like?"
  • "Well, it looks like a lowly mortal took out one of the Brotherhood. I'm waiting for that bolt of lightning to hit us now."
  • "That bastard Maxson really screwed them up. The Brotherhood used to be the good guys. Well, goodish."
  • "Those Brotherhood assholes are tough."
  • "I wonder if the name Brotherhood of Bigots was already taken?"
Giant insects
  • "What I'd give for an industrial sized tub of Bug Be Gone."
  • "Whatever egghead came up with giant bugs should've been nuked."

Children of Atom
  • "All the comforts of a cult without leaving your irradiated crater. Join the Children of Atom."
  • "Why would anyone ever join the Children? That's what I want to know."
  • "Capital Wasteland. Exports: purified water, some decent tech, oh, and an insane suicidal cult that worships radiation. Thanks, guys."
  • "I always feel unclean killing those Atom guys. That's probably just the radiation poisoning talking, though."
  • "Great more Children of Atom."
Deathclaw
  • "Brr... Deathclaws."
  • "I do not like 'Claws. Those fast, car flipping, ahh... They just get to me."
  • "If we're hunting Deathclaws, care to tag in Glory? Please?"
  • "Another Deathclaw down, and another of my 9 lives burned. Yay."
  • "Deathclaws, love them or leave them, they'll still tear your face off."
Feral ghouls
  • "I avoid ferals if I can help it."
  • "Glory came up with the bright idea of putting ferals in the catacombs. Not a fan."
  • "More ferals. Great."

  • "Don't underestimate the Gunners."
  • "Who's pulling the Gunners' strings? No one knows."

  • "Gunner's have had bounties on me. Well, me under different names and faces. I want to see how many slots I can fill on their most wanted list."
Mirelurks
  • "I would've paid 50 caps to be with you the first time you saw one of the crabs. Must've thought you'd walked into a B movie."
  • "I hate 'lurks. Piercing their shell is a bitch, let me tell you."
  • "Hit the 'lurks in their soft spot, if you can. Then grab butter. Yum."
  • "Can we just steer clear of the Mirelurks next time? They chew through my ammo."
  • "Because, you know, the world wasn't screwed enough. So sure, bring on the giant nearly indestructible crabs. That'll be good."
Mole rats

  • "I always feel a little bad shooting mole rats. Not bad enough not to eat them, though."
  • "Mole rat. The other white meat."

Synths
  • "I understand why Glory hates wasting Gen 1s and 2s. A very fuzzy line."
  • "I'm alright if we have to take out the Gen 1s and 2s. Barely, but alright."
  • "Tinker records every place we find the early gen synths. He says it'll reveal the Institute's Master Plan. Yeah, right."
  • "More synths. Great."
  • "EMP works well against synths. Well, the early models."

References

  1. The Sole Survivor: "You're a synth? Why didn't you tell me before?"
Deacon: "I don't like talking about it. I was one of the first synths they did the whole cranium reboot on. So it was a bit of a botch job. Most synths have fun fake memories. A happy home, a family. Me, I got nothing. And that... well, it does something to you."

  4. Deacon: "I put myself under the knife every year or two. New face, new body - you know, the full makeover. It keeps our enemies guessing."
  5. Deacon: "Hey. I got something important to say. I really appreciate you putting up with my bullshit. Truth is it's been a long time since I've had a... friend. I'm a liar. Everyone knows it. I make no secret of it. Because the truth is: I'm a fraud. To my core. When I was young, a hell of a long time ago, I was... well, scum. I was a bigot. A very violent bigot."
The Sole Survivor: "Were you really that bad?"
    Deacon: "Worse than that."
The Sole Survivor: "You trying to sell me another of your lies? Really?"
Deacon: "Just hear me out. Make your judgments then."
The Sole Survivor: "We all make mistakes when we're young."
Deacon: "A mistake or two, yeah. But what I did."
Deacon: "I ran with a gang in University Point. We called ourselves the UP Deathclaws. For kicks we'd terrorize anyone that we thought was a synth. We kept egging each other on. Started with some property damage graduated to some beat downs. Then, inevitably, a lynching. The Claw's leader was convinced we'd finally found and killed a synth. Looking back, I'm not so sure."
