Davin is the son of Modoc's slaughterhouse owner, Grisham, in Fallout 2.

Davin is a resident of the town of Modoc, son of the slaughterhouse owner Grisham, and brother of Miria. He helps his father run the family business, which he anticipates inheriting one day.

Unlike his shrewd and confident father, or his outgoing and popular sister, Davin is shy and self-effacing. His role in life is to help his father run the slaughterhouse, and his worldview doesn't seem to extend much beyond that.

Davin's limited social scope and general awkwardness conspire to make him the subject of eyebrow-raising rumors (all the more so given that they are likely true). Specifically, it seems safe to infer that he has had sexual relations with the brahmin under his care[1], as well as with his sister[2].

Not that Davin is uninterested in more conventional relations: flirtatious advances from an attractive stranger of either sex are liable to leave him dumbfounded, but eager. However, given the orneriness of his shotgun-toting father, such a situation is likely to lead to trouble for all concerned.

Interactions with player character

Interactions overview

This character is a permanent party member.

Male or female characters with Charisma 8, or with Charisma 7 and a good town reputation[3], can add Davin into the party by marrying him. In contrast to Miria, seduction of Davin is straightforward, given his earnestness: express your desire to sleep with him, and then the usual fade-to-black. (Except that in this case, the player's entire inventory ends up on the ground.) After the deed is done, Grisham will barge in and confront the player. If female, the player can attempt to explain away the awkward situation as a "medical examination". If this doesn't work, the only options are running and shotgun marriage. Note that this sequence can become bugged, so the more the player does during the brief interval between the deed and being 'caught' by Grisham, and the more the player does during the ceremony, the more likely that is to occur.

Davin can be married regardless of the Chosen One's party limit. Should you then ask someone to wait, he will fill the empty slot, and no new party members can be added.

If you run out on the marriage ceremony, the town of Modoc will turn hostile, so make sure you're finished with the area before you do.

As with his sister, Davin is extremely clingy: once you are married, you cannot ask him to wait for you anywhere. The only way to remove him from your party is to permanently part company, in one of three ways:

  1. Death — Attack him; allow him to be killed in combat; make him walk over a floor trap; or rip out his brain.
  2. Sell him into slavery to any of three slavers:
    1. Metzger (The Den) will pay ~$900 (influenced by Barter).
    2. Big Jesus (New Reno) will pay $200 ($400 with high enough Barter). You must be a slaver to sell to Jesus.
    3. Barkus (Vault City) will pay $200 ($400 with high enough Barter).
  3. Divorce — Ask Father Tully in New Reno for a divorce.

Any of these options will cause him to leave the player's party — and the game — permanently, and the player's "Married" status to become "Separated." If you return to Modoc and tell Grisham of his fate (or his presumed fate), the old man will have a fatal heart attack on the spot.

Combat Effectiveness

Once married, Davin will not leave the party unless killed, sold, or divorced. Like Miria, he has no additional points in any skills whatsoever, but since the default for Unarmed has the highest base value, he is most proficient (or least inept) at that skill. Like Miria, and unlike regular companion NPCs, neither his skills, HP, nor AP improve. Neither Davin nor Miria can level up. Being human-sized, he can wear armor.

Unlike Miria, he has the animation frames for Throwing, Clubs, and Pistols, as well as Knives, and a Strength of four rather than three, which, as Per Jorner explains, "means he sucks with a wider and different assortment of weapons".[4]

Davin's sister, Miria, can be married instead, with similar implications for the party's average combat readiness.

Transactional Interactions

If you thought Davin was desperate for some company, just wait until you encounter lonely trappers in the wasteland. They will happily trade gecko pelts for some quality time with your poor husband.

Likewise, the Corsican Brothers are always looking for skilled fluffers to help them with their filmmaking. If you're a decent person, you won't force your spouse to do such degrading work for a mere $3. But of course, in the world of Fallout, decency is always optional.

Drops on death

  • After marrying Davin, Grisham may say, "Treat my daughter well." This is most likely a generic line used if you marry either of his children.
  • Barkus's dialogue gives an initial offer of $250 for Davin, but this is a typo.[5]
  • As with all companions, Davin may disappear if you sleep with Mrs. or Miss Bishop and then save and reload your game before heading downstairs. Though Davin (and your other companions) will return the next time you sleep with either Bishop, this bug can be useful for keeping Davin out of harm's way, or even for overcoming the five-follower limit (since "disappeared" companions don't count against the limit, allowing you to recruit more followers before you retrieve the disappeared ones).[6]

Davin appears only in Fallout 2.
