Craig Boone, Fallout: New Vegas

Craig Boone (born 2255) is a former 1st Recon sharpshooter living at Novac, and one of Courier's possible compatriots in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

The 26 year old Boone is a man with a troubled past. He was once a soldier of the New California Republic Army together with his best friend, Manny Vargas,[2] a member of the prestigious 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, picked out at the firing range for his exceptional marksmanship skills. As part of the push into the Mojave, Boone was deployed to Camp Golf.[3] He fought during the First Battle of Hoover Dam, as the frontline camp was hit by Legion attacks.[4]

The battle with the Legion did not break him. It was a retaliatory expedition of the Republic a year later, in 2278, directed against the Great Khans. Following raider attacks on NCR settlements, the Army tracked down the Khans to Bitter Springs, a suspected stronghold. What they didn't know is that it was the Khans' main settlement. Boone's fireteam was deployed on Coyote Tail ridge.[5] Their orders were to cut off any Khans attempting to escape Bitter Springs down Canyon 37, to prevent them from flanking the main force. They were to shoot on sight.[6] However, the operation went wrong. when Khans started coming down canyon 37 in groups, the troopers noticed that they were women, kids, the elderly, with wounded Khans in tow. NCR command did not understand what was happening and ordered the troopers to fire till they were out of ammunition. They carried out the order.[7]

What happened there broke him. Boone became a murderer, if not in the eyes of the Republic, then in his own. He left the Army when his tour of duty ended, sick of war, to try and start everything from scratch.[8] He joined Carla, a beautiful woman he met on the New Vegas Strip on leave. She was talkative, charming, proud, everything Boone wasn't. She helped him forget. For a time, he was happy. Sometime in 2280,[9] they settled in Novac, down route 93. Boone found a job as town watchman, together with Manny Vargas, the best friend who enlisted with him and also his spotter.[10]

Boone never told Carla about Bitter Springs, though he really wanted to.[11] And then, he could not. Legion slavers sneaked into Novac one night while he was on watch, and took Carla, pregnant with Boone's child. They knew exactly when and how to come in order to sneak by him. Boone knew he was set up.[12] He talked to Manny about the disappearance. Their friendship ended instantly when his friend couldn't mask the fact her disappearance made him glad, as Boone's wife often clashed with him.[13]

The distraught marksman took to the road, to track Carla down and save her. He found her at a Legion outpost southeast, near the Colorado River. She was being sold, with men bidding on her. The entire area was locked down, with legionaries swarming by the hundreds. Boone could only see one solution. He could not track her in Legion lands. He could not abandon her to the Legion. He took the shot. He hit.[14][15][16]

He returned to Novac and resumed his duties as the town's watchman. He was apathetic, save for one emotion: Hate. Boundless hatred for the Caesar's Legion and the person who took his wife from him.[17]

Quests[]

  • One for My Baby: Boone enlists the player's help to figure out who was responsible for organizing his wife's kidnapping. Fingering the correct suspect will enable Boone as a possible companion.
  • I Forgot to Remember to Forget: If the player manages to coax Boone's story out of him, Craig will eventually ask to return to Bitter Springs to face his past. The player then has the opportunity to help him overcome the traumatic experiences that defined his life.
  • Beyond the Beef: Boone, like other human companions, can be offered to Mortimer as a feast. Boone is in good shape and looks healthy, but a little gamey and rugged to the cannibal.
  • You'll Know It When It Happens: Boone will offer input on the likely assassination attempts against the President. Two are correct.

Effects of the player's actions[]

  • Boone will protest against the mercy killing option and its suggestion during the quest Back in Your Own Backyard.
  • As long as Boone is the active companion and follows the player, Legion characters will remain hostile.
  • Boone will warn the player if their NCR reputation is negative or Legion reputation is positive. If the player further damages their standing with the NCR or improves their reputation with the Legion, Boone will leave permanently.
  • Boone will refuse to speak to the player entirely, if their NCR reputation is very negative or Legion reputation is very positive. This can be bypassed temporarily with any faction armor (except for the Legion's, of course).
  • Killing Caesar with Boone will prompt him to shout "Thumbs down, you son of a bitch." He will also remark on the kill when talked to and explain that ultimately it won't matter, as Caesar already has a succession line set up:

Heh. Yeah. That was some kind of stunt we pulled. Whatever happens from here on out, we killed that prick in the middle of his fortress. Ought to give the rest of them something to think about.

— Boone on the killing.

Intel we had back in the NCR said they had a whole succession lined up. They'll replace him as soon as word gets out. The other thing I heard is that he wasn't really commanding the army anymore. Guess we made sure of that.

That just means we've got more work to do.

Yeah, it does. But we got these bastards pretty good today.

— Boone and the Courier.
  • If the player kills Oscar Velasco (who will attack if Boone is in the party), the sniper will remark: "Great Khan looks like. Guess he fought at Bitter Springs. Or saw it happen".

Other interactions[]

  • Boone will warn the player that they will shoot any Legionary they see when approaching Cottonwood Cove or Nelson. The player can release Boone at that moment or remark that it's not a problem, but a solution.
  • Boone is not amused when he is aimed at: "How about I aim my gun at you for a while, see how you like it."
  • Taking his beret does not amuse Boone: "I would really like my beret back, please."
  • Killing the Legion, however, does amuse Boone: "Wish there was more of them, I wasn't done yet"

Non-player character comments[]

  • Boomers: Keep your distance, soldier.
  • Brotherhood of Steel: Why is your friend there glaring at me like that? Did I bump into him or something?
  • Followers: That's a First Recon beret. They're the best marksmen in the NCR military.
  • Freesiders: Keep your guns to yourself and there won't be any trouble.; You're not doing yourself a favor by having him tag along. NCR aren't welcome here.
  • Great Khans: You know you're traveling with a fucking murderer?
  • Gun Runners: First Recon is a top-notch unit. They're always buying sniper rifles from us.
  • NCR civilians: NCR Rangers deserve all my praise.
  • NCR troopers: I wish I had a First Recon guy looking out for me.
  • NCR tourists: Is your friend one of those elite troops we've been hearing about?
  • Nightkin: Head voices say quiet man knows more than he says about horns!
  • Omertas: Big tough ranger better not start any trouble in here.
  • Outer Vegas denizens: Keep the Ranger on a leash around here.; Make sure the NCR dog behaves, you're in the Mojave now.
  • Powder Gangers: That guy's got cold eyes. Definitely ex-military.
  • The Kings: That friend of yours NCR? He looks like he's NCR.

Endings[]

# Image Transcript Requirements
1 Boone end slide 01 Tired of waiting for the world to be done with him, Boone ventured into the wastes to make his own way out. Unable to clear his mind of the past, he was at last granted the death he'd awaited, bringing final rest to a life that had ended long ago.
  • Boone dead.
2 Boone end slide 02 As the Battle of Hoover Dam ended, Boone confirmed what he had always suspected - that revenge would never quiet his troubled mind. Side arm in hand, he journeyed back to California in search of the NCR officer who had led the attack on Bitter Springs. There, with only two bullets loaded, Boone did the only thing he believed would put an end to his suffering.
3 Boone end slide 03 Looking for a place where he could be of some use, Boone found himself re-enlisting with his old unit. Though his regrets remained in his thoughts, they coalesced into a purpose, and Boone embraced it. He spent his leave time hunting down slavers in the desert, his First Recon beret the last thing they never saw.
4 Boone end slide 03 Though NCR was withdrawing from the region, Boone remained in New Vegas, finding work as a security guard and caravan scout along the highways. While he might've preferred rejoining his old unit, Boone couldn't bring himself to abandon the city where he'd met his wife.
5 Boone end slide 03 Boone refused to take the Legion's victory lying down. Heading to the hills with his rifle, he began a deadly campaign against high-ranking Legion officers. And though the price on his head rose to levels unheard of, few pursued it, fearing it would be the last thing they'd never see.
6 Boone end slide 03 No longer held in check by his conscience, Boone found lucrative work as a mercenary and Assassin. No job was too violent, no target too innocent. As long as the caps were good, Boone would take the job.
7 Boone end slide 03 Driven mad by Caesar's victory at Hoover Dam, and unable to escape his memories, Boone staged a suicide mission against the Legate. Fighting as he wished he would've fought on the day of his wife's death, he brought down scores of Legionaries before being caught. Before his crucifixion, he was brought before the Legate, who expressed his admiration for Boone's reckless abandon. Boone spat tobacco in his eye, for all of Caesar's armies to see.

Notable quotes[]

  • "[It is because of Bitter Springs that you think you've got bad things coming?] Life has a way of punishing you for the mistakes you make. Big enough mistake, punishment can take a while. Mine's not over."
  • "[You had no right to make that decision.] There was no decision. I was meant to pull that trigger. It was a mistake to think I could escape it. You take out a debt, it's only a matter of time before someone comes collecting. Things just finally caught up with me."

  • PCIcon pc Xbox 360Icon xbox360 While switching equipment, the game will erroneously multiply the bonus from Boone's beret. This can be reset by taking his beret and returning it to him.

  2. The Courier: "What did you and Boone's wife argue about?"
Manny Vargas: "Man, you name it. See, I grew up in North Vegas. Me and my cousins. We were some bad seeds. Got in with a gang. I loved it. Then something happened, and I couldn't handle it anymore. So, I enlisted. Earned my future. Brought down my best friend to share that future with me. And here was this woman who was too good for it, trying to take him away. So yeah. I didn't see eye-to-eye with the bitch."
    (Manny Vargas' dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "What outfit did you serve in the military with?"
Craig Boone: "They moved us around a lot. I was stationed at Camp Golf for a while. Last I heard they were at Camp McCarran."
The Courier: "How did you happen to join First Recon?"
Craig Boone: "They pick you out if you do well at the firing range. Pays a little better, so I said okay."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  4. The Courier: "What was Camp Golf like?"
Craig Boone: "It was on the front line for a while. Only resort in New Vegas no one wanted to get sent to. Doesn't have that kind of importance anymore, though. They pulled most of the troops out of there after we took the Hoover Dam."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  5. Craig Boone: "This is the place. We got sent from Camp Golf, looking for some Khans who'd been making trouble with one of our settlements. I guess one of the settlers was connected, because we sent everything we had. We figured this was a gang hideout, but... they'd led us to their home. There's a ridge called Coyote Tail on the south side. That's where we set up."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  6. Craig Boone: "Canyon 37. That's what the NCR calls the pass down there. It was the Khans' only escape, so we set up here to guard it while the main force attacked from the front. Standing orders were to shoot on sight."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "What happened?"
Craig Boone: "Main force got spotted too soon. We heard shooting. Then Khans started coming through Canyon 37 in bunches. It was all wrong, though. Women, kids, elderly. Wounded started coming through, too. We radioed to confirm our orders but command didn't get what we were seeing. They told us to shoot till we were out of ammo. So that's what we did."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  8. The Courier: "Maybe you can make up for your mistakes."
Craig Boone: "A murderer who does good deeds is still a murderer. And he'll still get his judgment. I left the NCR when my tour was up. Had enough of war. Decided I was gonna start over. None of it made a difference in the end."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  9. The Courier: "No."
Craig Boone: "I don't know who you think you're kidding. I've lived here for more than a year. Anyway, I need someone I can trust, and you may be a liar, but you're also a stranger. And that's a start."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  10. The Courier: "Tell me about your wife."
Craig Boone: "I met Carla while I was at the Strip on leave. She said I looked lost. She talked a lot. Suited me fine - I never know what to say. And listening to her, it could... make you forget. She stuck out, pretty much everywhere we went. Like she was from a different time. A better time. I never met anyone like her."
    Craig Boone's dialogue)
  11. The Courier: "Did you ever tell your wife about what happened at Bitter Springs?"
Craig Boone: "No. I wanted to. I just couldn't."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  12. The Courier: "What do you want me to do?"
Craig Boone: "I want you to find something out for me. I don't know if there's anything to find, but I need someone to try. My wife was taken from our home by Legion slavers one night while I was on watch. They knew when to come and what route to take, and they only took Carla. Someone set it up. I don't know who."
    Craig Boone's dialogue)
  13. The Courier: "Not anymore?"
Craig Boone: "When Carla went missing he was the first person I told."
    Craig Boone's dialogue)
  14. The Courier: "You're hiding something. Spit it out. You owe me."
Craig Boone: "She... I tracked her down. Southeast, near the river. They were selling her. Saw it through my scope. Whole place swarming with Legion. Hundreds of them. Bidding for things no man has a right to. I just had my rifle with me. Just me, against all of them, so... I took the shot."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  15. The Courier: "Better for her to die than live a Legion slave."
Craig Boone: "Yeah. What they do to women... that's worse than death. There was no choice in what I did. It was more like... being forced to watch something you can't stop. All this was only ever going to play out one way. It still is. I don't have any say. All I can do is wait for it to be done with me."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  16. The Courier: "You should've tried to rescue her. Even if it meant your death."
Craig Boone: "There was never any saving her. They'd have taken her where I couldn't follow. What I did... that was the only rescue."
The Courier: "You had no right to make that decision."
Craig Boone: "There was no decision. I was meant to pull that trigger. It was a mistake to think I could escape it. You take out a debt, it's only a matter of time before someone comes collecting. Things just finally caught up with me."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
  17. The Courier: "You make it sound like your wife's death was inevitable."
The Courier: "It was gonna be something. If I'd never met Carla, it would've been something else. I should've never gotten close to her. I've got bad things coming to me. You'd better keep your distance, too."
    (Craig Boone's dialogue)
