The Courser Chip is the key to infiltrating the Institute. But first, it must be decoded...

Fallout 4 loading screen hints

The courser chip is a quest item in Fallout 4.

Characteristics[]

One of the most advanced pieces of technology at the Institute's disposal,[1] the chip grants Coursers a direct connection to the teleporter in the Institute. It's embedded in a chip in their heads,[2] and obtaining that chip is the first step in infiltrating the shadowy organization. But first, it must be decoded.[3] Decoding a chip is a very delicate operation and losing data is the least serious complication.[4]

  1. The Sole Survivor: "Why do you want the Courser Chip?"
Desdemona: "Institute tech is light years beyond what we have. And a Courser Chip is top of the line. I'm not going to get into details. But that chip could help us save lives. Maybe throw a wrench in some of the Institute's operations. So, hand over the chip."
    (Desdemona's dialogue)
  2. The Sole Survivor: " Is that even possible?"
Brian Virgil: "They're not invincible, so technically it's possible. Whether you're capable of it... I guess we'll find out. Every Courser has special hardware that gives them a direct connection to the Relay in the Institute. It's embedded in a chip in their heads. You need that chip. But to get it, you'll have to find a Courser. Now I don't know exactly where you can find one. They haven't sent any after me, and sitting here waiting doesn't seem like a good plan. You're going to have to hunt one down. I can tell you where to start, and give you some help finding one, but you'll have to do the dirty work."

  3. Fallout 4 loading screen hints: "Inside every synth Courser is a specialized chip that is instrumental in "relaying" into the Institute. Obtaining that chip is the first step in infiltrating the shadowy organization."
  4. Desdemona: "Decoding a Courser Chip is a very delicate operation. A million things can go wrong - the least of which is losing the data. Fortunately, we have the right man for the job."
TinkerTom: "Hey, Dez. You need something?"
Desdemona: "Tom, we got a Courser Chip."
TinkerTom: "Whoa? For real? Oh man, it's been ages."
