Contraptions Workshop is the fourth add-on for Fallout 4, developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks.

Release and availability

Contraptions Workshop was released on June 21, 2016 for all platforms, and costs $4.99.

Overview

As the name suggests, Contraptions Workshop adds several gizmos and gadgets to enhance one's settlements or simply make a little fun. There are new structures, including buildings, elevators, and a track kit that creates massive Rube Goldberg style contraptions that can encompass entire settlements. The add-on also features manufacturing machines, conveyor belts, and display cases to help supplement and connect the new structures and contraptions.

Contraptions

The most notable of contraptions is the ball track, which comes with a number of ramps, curves, funnels, splits, and mergers. With the proper infrastructure, and coupled with other structures, like elevators and conveyor belts, these tracks can be massive, allowing balls to traverse entire settlements.

Manufacturing

A number of conveyor belts have been added to help sort junk items. Conveyor systems can take the items placed on them and transfer allowing them to be collected, sorted and fed into one of ten automated builders. By attaching a terminal with a builder (listed below), one can craft other junk items, basic armor, weapons (including energy and heavy weapons), explosives, all kinds of conventional ammunition, processed food items, and firework shells (described below).

Structures

There are three new structures for one's settlements: warehouses come with a variety of prefabricated structures, along with floors, walls, roofs, stairs, and doors to customize the structures to the builder's liking. The other two structures are a number of boxcars (available in blue and orange) as well as scaffolding, with plenty of types of frames, floors, stairs, and railings. Elevators have also been added, allowing one to be elevated two, three or four stories up their structure once the elevator is powered.

Power

Conduits and logic gates

If one doesn't like the look of wires dangling about a settlement, several types of conduits have been include; these allow power to be directed in all sorts of directions to their destination, even to the other side of a wall, in sleek looking pipes and junctions. Logic gates can also be attached to electrical systems as to allow power to the system only when a specific combination of power inputs are met.

Launchers

Three types of launchers are added: a pitching machine, a junk mortar, and two types of firework mortars. The pitching machine simply launches any small junk and/or miscellaneous item loaded into it once powered; notably, explosives that are placed inside the pitching machine are primed and detonate after being launched.

Likewise, the junk mortar will hurl junk items into the air after loading it up and powering it on. Firework launchers either propel fireworks (now craftable at a chemistry station) straight up into the air or at an angle after being powered up; these allow one to create dazzling firework displays, or even alter the current weather.

Marquee

Bright marquee signs and letter are added as well, including all manners of arrow signage, a marque sign and acrylic lettering, which has A-Z, 0-9, and some punctuation.

Furniture

Several display cases are also added, allowing one to decorate their home with mannequins for displaying armor, pegboards and mesh for displaying weapons, standard display cases, and even display cases for favorite sets of power armor. In addition, there are over 40 new pre-War posters that come in back lit and front lit varieties that can be used to liven up a house or building.
