Don't mind trailblazing as long as we've got the ammo... and whiskey.
”— CassRose of Sharon Cassidy, usually just Cass or Whiskey Rose,[2] is a caravan master and owner of Cassidy Caravans in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.
She was born in 2244.[3]
Background[]
Born in 2244, Cass is the daughter of John Cassidy and a tribal woman he met on his travels after parting ways with the Chosen One.[4][5] Her father upped and left to once more wander the wastes while she was still young - leaving her only a name, a pendant,[6] his shooting skills and propensity for hard drinking and violence.[7]
Worn down by years of hard luck and a recent rash of terrible misfortunes, Cass is a despondent merchant who's about to get out of the caravan business. She's smart, tough, and steady with a gun, but hasn't been savvy enough to survive the ruthless caravan wars that have flared up in Nevada since the NCR's expansion. Though quick to join up with the player for some easy money, she's still interested in finding out if she's been suffering from bad luck or something more sinister.
When first encountered by the Courier, Cass is drowning her sorrows at the Mojave Outpost bar. NCR Ranger reports have reached her that her caravan has been attacked and "burned to ash," placing an even greater burden on her shoulders. However, threats along the road into New Vegas and problems with NCR paperwork have so far prevented her from leaving the outpost to investigate the attack.
Cass has inherited her father's heart condition, and will show her disgust for chems if the Courier speaks to her whilst under their effects.[8] On another note, her knowledge of the world is considerable, but not without holes. For example, she is not aware that golf is a sport, rather than a person, referring to Camp Golf as a monument to a man of that name and recounting soldier remarks that it used to be a minefield, with mine locations marked by numbers.[9]
Personality[]
Cass has an aggressive and eager, sometimes even impatient attitude, often telling the courier to hurry up or get on with it, and does not take well to insults or her time wasted. She also enjoys violence quite a bit, much like her father.[7]
She is also very outspoken on the NCR and Caesar's Legion, mostly pointing out the bureaucratic messes of the NCR and the Legion's use of woman as breeding tools. Lastly, Cass treats sex casually, and appears to be interested in women as well as men, under the right circumstances.[10] [11]

Quests[]
- Heartache by the Number: The player recruits Cass as a companion, then investigates her sacked caravan and helps exact revenge on the perpetrators.
- Successfully completing Cass' companion quest will give her one of two perks:
- Calm Heart, which raises her health by 50 points.
- Hand of Vengeance, which grants a 15% bonus to the damage Cass inflicts with Guns-skill weapons.
- Successfully completing Cass' companion quest will give her one of two perks:
- You Can Depend on Me: The player is sent by Alice McLafferty to convince Cass to sell her caravan.
- Birds of a Feather: The player is sent by Jean-Baptiste Cutting to either kill Cass or lure her to the Silver Rush to be killed.
- Note: Completing Heartache by the Number first, causes the Van Graff faction to become hostile and you will no longer be able to talk to Jean-Baptiste Cutting to complete this mission.
- Beyond the Beef: The player can offer Cass, or any other human companion, as a substitute to Mortimer for the banquet.
Other interactions[]
- If any amount of whiskey is put Cass' inventory, she will drink it leaving only Empty whiskey bottles.
- Once she joins the courier as a companion, Rose of Sharon Cassidy will give the player the recipe for Cass' moonshine which is craftable by the player at campfires.
- If the player has all of the ingredients on hand, she can also craft moonshine without needing a campfire.
- If the player has at least 6 Endurance, challenging Cass to a drinking contest will result in her complimenting them on their endurance, though they will still lose it. If the Endurance stat is 8 or more, then Cass will lose and end in drunken stupor, dismissing all three (or four) of the Couriers at once.
- She has unique idle dialogue for locations around the Mojave;

Location | Comment |
Red Rock Canyon | These boys and girls can really down the bottles. Whiskey and liquor don't last long around here, by the sight of it. Wonder if any of these folks would be up for shots of courage - and a wager. Be *really* careful what you say here. Should have heard stories of the Khans years ago - they were one tough bunch, now... Khans lost their strength after Bitter Springs, came here to lick their wounds. Let's not split up here, all right? Don't take any chems here - hell knows what they're laced with. Won't trade with Khans - they've poisoned most of the villages west of Vegas with chems. Fiends would suffer withdrawal and die without the Khans. Place would be beautiful... without the chem addicts and dealers. Guess someone had to put them down. Have a Vegas-style boxing ring in the center there. Really wish we could go to some civilized places. Even the flies here are chemed. God, you can smell the Brahmin shit from the jet all over this place. |
Generic wasteland | Sure could use a drink. All this traveling's making me thirsty. Careful if we go off the road. Don't mind trailblazing as long as we got the ammo. And whiskey. Feels good not to have to drag a Brahmin train across the Mojave. Glad I left the Outpost behind. Caravan of two now. |
Bitter Springs | Heard NCR recon fucked up here once, with the Khans. Heard NCR drove the Khans out of here, to Red Rock. Place stinks of sand, piss, and vomit. Refugees. Watch out - easy to get sick around here. |
Black Mountain | Crazy ass radio signals around here, couldn't make sense of them. Place sets geiger counters ticking. No idea why the highest point in the Mojave is so rad-lit. |
Camp Guardian | Just goes to show you, no matter where you go, there's NCR trying to hold onto every corner of the world. Guess they chose this spot to spy on Caesar. Poor bastards. Guess NCR's fish food. Nice sign. |
Cottonwood Cove | Should kill all these slavers. Damn slavers. Those dogs look like they could savage a Securitron. We go across that launch, we may not come back. This is the only place to cross the Colorado safely. I hope we're not planning to cross the river. Only merchants, slaves and Legion come here. |
Camp Forlorn Hope | Another proud NCR camp. Probably chose this place because of the water supply. Morale looks low. I smell Hydra in the air, just a whiff. |
The Fort | Be damn careful here. Don't like the way the men are looking at me. Keep your eyes to yourself, Legion asshole. Can't believe you want to talk to this guy. Love how he's decorated the place. Women might as well be dirt... not anxious to join them. Wish these women would take knives to Caesar's troops in their beds. |
The Fort (the return) | Can't belive we're fucking back here. Testing our luck coming back here. You sure you know what you're doing? They try and put one of those Brahmin packs on me, they're asking for a gelding. Going to get gelded. Can't say I've seen a smile on anyone's face since we arrived. Hope NCR wipes Caesar off the map. Guess the tent belongs to the big man. Not much future in the Legion if you don't have a dick. I'm heading back West if Caesar moves on the Dam. Not looking forward to being a Legion wife. |
Hidden Valley | What's that hum? Watch for scorpions. Doesn't fell like the rest of the Mojave here. Storms pick up quick around here. |
Hoover Dam | Check out those guns - rumor had it they used to shoot planes down before the war. Place looks like how my bladder feels. Place always wants me to take a piss. Ever look down the Dam? Sends your head spinning. |
Jacobstown | Place is fucking cold. Pine trees? Can't believe we're in a refuge for crazy super mutants. Wish I'd packed a jacket. Only seen snow, not walked through it. Crazy - frozen water? Should package this shit. Heard they could make "ice" in the Old World and carry it around. Dad used to say that in the Old World, people would put boards on their feet and soar down the mountains. |
Mojave Outpost | Back here again? What, didn't see enough of the sites here the first time? Once here, most just stall out, can't go deeper into territory. Fucking monument. From here, it's Nipton to the east or Primm to the north. And here's the slice of the world where NCR's hands start slipping. |
Nelson | Guess the miners got fucked. Where's the mine from here? If this place got hit, Novac's next. I think I'm going to be sick. Nipton wasn't the best towns, but... Mayor Steyn got what was coming to him, looks like. Mayor here used to shelter gangers, hear tell. Guess it didn't save him. Should we cut the people down... Who the hell was that? I... hope they don't hit the Mojave Outpost. |
Quarry Junction | Smells like deathclaw. Looks like this place got wrecked. Looks like this place go mined - in the wrong ways. |
Boulder City | Should hit the Big Horn saloon here. Heard there's still mines in the city - and maybe drunk NCR soldiers spoiling for a fight. Rubble city, more like it. There's a bar in the intact section, careful if you go wandering around the ruined section. |
Camp Golf | Not much reason to ship water here, but liquor... hard to meet demand. If NCR didn't grate me so, I'd come here for water resupply. Used to ship a lot of liquor here, soldiers here have too much free time. If there's a reason to attack NCR, Camp Golf's a reason. Watch out for the Misfits here - 9th Platoon, word of their fuck-ups is legendary. Golf was a president, I think. Maybe for NCR. Heard this used to be a mine field from some of the troopers here. Each spot for a land mine is numbered, hear tell. If you're looking for NCR's spine, ain't going to find it here. Well, Hanlon sure let this place go to shit. Lot of sites to this guy Golf all over the West. |
Fiend territory | Shit. Fiends. Smells like Fiends. Can smell the chem labs and Jet from here. Make sure you have a backup weapon, Fiends don't go down easy. Watch for dogs. Heard tell there was a Vault somewhere around here. |
Freeside | Hometown of the Van Graffs, don't care for this place too much. We shouldn't be in here. Water's scarce, but between things like this and Lake Mead, ain't too bad in the West as in other places. Watch out for the Kings, they're unpredictable. Kings dress like strutting girls, all fancy like. Once had a King following me like I was following you - had to chase him off with a shotgun finally. Kings told me I couldn't deal water here, fuckers. They like having mono. As in monopoly. Ralph might be able to forge a pass into the Strip for you, you need one. Looking for weapons, check out Mick and Ralphs... Mick's probably a sight better than Ralph, always trying to talk me out of my pants. Kings are led by the King. Has some kind of robot dog. Guess it hunts robot rats. Kings hold control over the water pump 'round here. |
NCR Correctional Facility | Looks like prisoners are in charge now. No guards in the towers, not a good sign. Guess NCR fucked this place, too. |
Nellis Air Force Base | Folks here have access to Lake Mead, fresh drinking water. Careful, Boomer territory. They ain't hostile, but they're a bit trigger happy. Boomers are a might twitchy. Folks here aren't friendly to anyone. Don't be shooting wild in here - might set something off. First time I seen a fence made out of artillery. Some of these weapons look like they came from Hawthorne Army Depot, place has a lot of history. Can hear the screaming of rockets and explosions in this place at night. Got nests for planes here. An assault on this place would be suicide. |
Novac | This place reminds me the Old World had too much time on its hands. Named this place after the hotel. NoVac's the hotel, not the lizard. Smells like junk. Can see Dinky for miles, good landmark. First saw this place, thought the giant gecko was real. Read a book that giant lizards walked the earth like this one - might be a gecko this size. |
Primm | Said there's a courier office here? Sign of the buffalo. Ah, Bison Steve, you old shithole. Those post office boxes in these old towns still work. Good contact, Nash, used to be here. Had a son that went West. Old World had cars that ran on roads like these above the ground, 'cept they didn't go anywhere. The sheriff here ain't worth a damn. Crazy ass shit. |
Ranger Station | Rest stop. NCR's friendly, might be able to resupply. A little safe ground. NCR flag - not safe, close to it, though. |
New Vegas Strip | Chairmen, Omertas... a whole bunch of families rule Vegas, don't step out a line as long as money's to be made. Welcome to sin. Watch where you step. Watch for NCR vomit. Hope you're not here to chase your losses. Now to find a bar. Don't understand how the missiles could have missed a target like this. Beats Freeside. Can't believe we got in here. Dad used to say this place was what Reno tried to be. Fucking Reno. Place feels like the Sorcerer of Oz sometimes. Heard stories about the Lucky 38, how nobody's ever gone inside - 'cept you, that is. |
Goodsprings | Looking to step on your own grave? Not every day you come back to your gravesite. Heard the Doc here is a good guy. Crimson Caravan had some trouble here. Hill where you got shot? |
NCR | Be careful they don't charge us any tolls. Don't tell them where we're from - or headed. |
Flirtation[]
- If the player has the Lady Killer perk, he can accuse Cass of flirting with him, saying, "Miss Cassidy... are you flirting with me?" Doing so will result in Cass making it clear that nothing is ever going to happen between the two and he better respect that, as she "knows his type", implying the Courier is a "player".
- If the player has a high enough speech and the Lady Killer perk she'll say she "knows his look" and knows he says all the right things to leave a trail of broken hearts across the Mojave.
- If the player has the Confirmed Bachelor perk, he can respond to Cass's flirting by saying they should not be anything more than friends. Cass states that he must have a "Legion" point of view, implying that he is not interested in women.
- If the player has the Black Widow perk, she can respond to Cass's comment about not liking "soft men" by saying that they're rarely a problem for the player.
- If the player has the Cherchez La Femme perk, she can respond to Cass's comment about not liking "soft men" by saying that they're rarely an issue for the player, wherein Cass will respond by - with a shocked expression - defending herself, nervously saying that she meant no offense, and that when she's had enough to drink, she doesn't care who she ends up in bed with.
- If the player already has the max amount of companions and asks Cass to join, she may respond by saying "Not in the mood for a threesome. {Under her breath} Today."
Effects of the player's actions[]
- If you are labeled as a Terrorist by the NCR (killing the New Vegas NCR Ambassador is one way to accomplish this), Cass will always be hostile to the Courier even when disguised (but not while she's currently your active companion). She may also ambush you at a place you fast travel to.
Low Karma[]
- After Cass joins the player, opening a conversation with her when in negative karma (below -100) will cause her to complain about the player's behavior. With Speech of 65 they can convince her that they are trying to improve, or can just acknowledge her discontent and continue the conversation.
- If the player talks to Cass again with even more negative karma (-150) she will confront them a second time. With a Speech of 65 the player can promise improvement or just go on with the conversation.
- After the second confrontation, Cass won't complain anymore as long as the player stays above -249 karma. Talking to her again with evil karma (-250 or less) will result in her leaving the party, with no way of convincing her to stay. Thus talking to her with evil Karma should be avoided, as the player can talk to her no more than twice before she leaves the party. The only way to avoid this is to improve one's karma.
- Making an offensive comment about her dead parents causes Cass to leave the party and attack on the spot.
Non-player character comments[]
- Nightkin: Head voices say they knew flower girl's father.
- NCR civilians: Your merchant friend would make a fine NCR woman.
- Boomers: Whatever you're selling, we have plenty.
- Fiends: I wouldn't mind hitting that. She put out?
- Powder Gangers: Tough-looking woman. Something tells me she aims for the crotch.
- Followers: Isn't that Cass? I heard she'd gotten out of the caravan business.
- Freesiders: Check out the Wrangler if she needs booze.
- The Kings: Hellooo, cowgirl! You mind if talk to your lady friend a bit instead of you?
- Omertas: Let me know if the pretty lady with you is looking for some work.
- Outer Vegas denizens: Your merchant friend is always welcome among us.

Notable quotes[]
Notes[]
- Similar to her father, Cass is by far the most vocal companion, making periodic random comments and having something to say about almost every location she visits with the Courier. She also makes comments about the changes caused by the Courier's intervention.
- As of the latest patch, Cass has become far less vocal; she still has unique dialogue concerning many of the major locations in the game, but will only make a random comment once every 24 hours instead of every single time a location is visited.
- When asked about her opinions on Caesar's Legion, she expresses a similar hatred for slavers just like her father. Cass does however concede that Legion-marked caravans and their supply lines are, unlike the NCR's, well guarded and "safe as houses."
- When asked about the monuments outside the Mojave Outpost, after her response, there will be an option for you to tell her what the statues actually depict if you are at least accepted by the NCR. She will then respond in typical Cass fashion.
- She will comment that her father used to tell her that Vegas is what Reno tried to be, right before she exclaims her disdain for Reno. While in the Lucky 38 she references how it makes her feel like the Sorcerer of Oz.[12]
- Even though Cass excessively drinks whiskey, she still looks physically healthy.
- Cass' actual combat skills are completely different from what she tells the player in dialogue. When asked about her combat skills, Cass implies she's skilled in explosives and unarmed combat, but unskilled with melee weapons. In truth, she has melee weapons as a tagged skill, but is unskilled in explosives and unarmed combat. However when it comes to her talking about her explosives skill, she only talks about using dynamite which has no skill requirements. This would make her claimed skill with explosives partially true.
- Cass is capable of wearing power armor, so long as it is non-faction armor.
- Cass is the only companion that requires the Courier to make a skill check to recruit (50+ barter or speech required).
- Despite stating that her tribal mother never taught her to use throwing spears, she will use them effectively if given some. The comment is a reference to dialogue in Fallout 2 between the Chosen One and her father, where John is somewhat ashamed to divulge that he is quite good with throwing spears as it makes him seem like a tribal. He then apologizes for the remark upon learning of the Chosen One's heritage, and quite poetically goes on to marry a tribal woman.
- Amusingly enough, the Powder gangers will comment on her to be a "tough-looking woman, who aims for the crotch."
- If you have Cass as a companion and have completed the quest Crazy, Crazy, Crazy by repairing Rhonda, nightkin settling in Black Rock Cave will mention "the voices knew flower girl's father," implying that they've met John Cassidy in the past.
- If you offer to give her to Mortimer during the quest Beyond the Beef, he will comment that she could skip the whiskey marinade, but everything else is in eatable condition except her liver.
- By visiting Novac, Cass will comment on Dinky the T-Rex by recalling a memory of her reading a book about "giant lizards." She will also continue to make different remarks about the town and its landmark upon re-visiting it.
- The ending for when Mr. House retains control of Vegas quotes Cass as saying, "We were going full speed ahead... but facing backwards the whole time." This alludes to the final line of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby: "So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past." This is appropriate, since Mr. House's ideal is also of a Gilded Age world: "the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us...."
Appearances[]
Rose of Sharon Cassidy appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.
Behind the scenes[]
- Rose of Sharon is a common name that applies to several different species of flowering plants that are highly valued throughout the world and originates in the Bible. She is named after the character of the same name in John Steinbeck's novel The Grapes of Wrath, which she describes as "some Old World book about dirt pilgrims."
- Chris Avellone designed Cass' companion arc. He was specifically asked to do it by J.E. Sawyer, to maintain consistency between John Cassidy's characterization in Fallout 2 and that of his daughter in New Vegas.[13][14]
- The playing cards that come with the Collectors Edition of Fallout: New Vegas depict Cass as a blonde. This was probably one of the earlier concepts of her; in the game she has red hair.
- During the development process of Cass, there was an idea to include companion romances. In Cass' case, it would end with the player character waking up next to her drunk and marrying her. The marriage would take place with The King doing the proceedings with an Elvis song.[15]
- The original idea for Cass's Whiskey Rose perk was that the player could carry more water items, along with receiving a healing bonus from its consumption. This was then changed to become more valuable as a companion game mechanic, and to also reinforce her hard-drinking personality.[13]
- Cass was intended to have an even greater amount of incidental dialogue than the insane amount she already has. She has a LOT of cut blank dialogue topics relating to the Hoover Dam battle events that comprise around FOURTY cut lines relating to each endgame outcome (e.g. fighting for House, independent, NCR, Legion). She has lines to comment on various areas of the dam, as well as meeting certain important NPCs (e.g. Oliver, Lanius, etc). Interestingly she also has lines that presumably relate to the cut Arizona spillway map (e.g. VCassEventHDHouseSpillway). This suggests these lines were cut early on.
- Cass also has a set of reactivity dialogue lines for commenting on all kinds of player choices. It's not clear what the criteria of these would have been (from the spectrum of comments, presumably for completing quests in certain ways), but she has a large number of positive and negative comments to go from being impressed by the player's action to being disgusted. There are four topics, which are VCassReallyLike, VCassReactLike, VCassReactBad, VCassReallyBadReact (good example: "{Commenting on player's behavior}Set an example, others will follow." bad example: "{Commenting on player's behavior}That was fucked up". She also has unused dialogue that was supposed to play when the player drank whiskey while she was a companion, as part of her Whiskey Rose perk ("{Shot of whiskey}Now all I need is some shame to wash it down with."). The reactivity comments and whisky lines are all fully voice acted.
- There is an early test version of her dialogue located in VFollowerDialogueRose. It just contains a few test lines to advance parts of her questline.
Bugs[]
- Some time after the Van Graffs kill Cass you may get the pop up that Cass has returned to the Mojave Outpost or the Lucky 38.
- Cass has the infuriating habit of sometimes trying to occupy exactly the same spot as you when you are crouched firing at a target. This can result in her being completely inside you and unable to fire, or even in you scoring a critical hit on her. Using the companion wheel to tell her to back off usually fixes the problem.
- Cass' karma-based drop out of the party can be abused to get a second humanoid companion, as her final breaking line with evil karma will even be shown when she is not currently in the party. When she leaves or attacks, the game will assume your current humanoid companion has left the party, and you can add another one. After dismissing both of them, the counter resets and you are again limited to only one humanoid companion.
- If you kill the Van Graffs before recruiting her she will talk to you about her quest. You can still recruit Cass if you do the first part in Alice McLafferty's set of requests. To be able to finish Cass's quest, you MUST kill Alice McLafferty and then speak to Cass.
- Lucky 38 before starting sub-quest from the Van Graff's brother, quest mark will indicate that she is located close to the Mojave Outpost, but player won't be able to actually see her there. Then quest mark will guide the Courier to the Silver Rush where player can tell Jean-Baptiste that she is dead. She seems to disappear from the game at this point. If she was sent to
- After recruiting her as a follower the screen will get a blue tint to it then when you exit the building the tint will disappear and your screen will flash as if a chem had just worn off. Sometimes this glitch will occur after clicking on her as if to drag an item, without having recruited her at all.
- Sometimes when sent to the Lucky 38 she can be seen walking around the Casino floor.
- After fast traveling to a location she will occasionally start running away as quick as she can for no reason. To correct this either enter a building (That makes your game load a new area) or fast travel to another location.
- If you work for the Crimson Caravan Company before you talk to Cass or the Van Graffs, it will say to talk to Alice McLafferty. If this happens talk to the Van Graffs.
- Weapons placed in Cass' inventory may become fully repaired after being taken out of her inventory.
- If Cass's perk giving quests are completed before ever meeting her (as in killing the Van Graffs and Alice McLafferty); upon meeting her, the game will initiate dialogue as if you have met before with seemingly no prompts available to carry the conversation into the recruitment phase. It seems that after this the option of having Cass as a companion is lost forever.
- Jean-Baptiste, quips by certain non-player character's in the game (such as the "she aims for the crotch" comment) will still be played as if Cass is still your companion. Fiends in Vault 3 will also make the comments "I'll hit that" and "Does she put out?". After delivering her and letting her be killed by
- Executing the glitch with Cass (and Veronica) that gets them to take off their head gear, and not put back on has a high chance to permanently glitch the players save files. The glitched files will not load. The game will start normally, but every time the player loads a glitched file it will freeze the console.
- During her companion quest, getting the Cal Heart perk then killing the Van Graffs and Alice McLafferty will give her the Hand of Vengeance perk as if you'd never resolved it legally.

Used to call me "Whiskey Rose" back West, before I punched enough people, so now they say it, but quiet and when I'm not around."
The Courier: "Whiskey Rose?"
Rose of Sharron Cassidy: "Yeah, on account of my name... and the blossoms on my cheeks when I drink too much. Won most of those fights, too. Can take a hell of a punch and give it right back when I've got a bottle in me. It's all in how you drink it, though - there's a trick to it. When we pass the bottle, I'll show you how it's done."

As for Dad, I figure he just got himself lost or dead. Happens... and I'm not all boo-hoo about it, so save your glass for someone who's crying."
The Courier: "Any idea why he went East?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Not a clue. When he left, I was too in my crib to understand why, and around the time Mom passed, I was too into my teens to listen. Got his name, got this pendant, and that's about it. Gift from my Dad, along with my name. Rose of Sharon Cassidy. Mom said he got the name out of some Old World book about dirt pilgrims.
