Cannon balls, or "round shot," are among the earliest developed of sophisticated munitions, dating back to the 1600s. They were crucial munitions featured in battles of land and sea, before the evolution of shells in the mid-1800s, where the projectile and payload are in a single cartridge.
This metal ball fits in the palm of one's hand; intended to breach the hulls of ships and the walls of forts, one can imagine the effect such a projectile would have on a soft, fleshy target.
