Questions are dangerously close to independent thought, citizen.

Library processing unit 232.7 (or book chute), is an artificial personality in the Big MT in 2281.

Background[]

A curious machine that was likely designed as a recycling device for old books and writing implements, the book chute is capable of rapidly pulping, processing, and generating blank books from any written material input. It can also break down pencils and clipboards into raw materials for re-use.

In a fit of apparent cynicism, Dr Mobius imbued the chute with the personality of a stereotypical, jingoist censor. To the AP, all pre-War books are seditious material and it desires nothing more than their wholesale recycling into properly patriotic books (blanks). It reacts with disbelief and fury to any mention of Communism, communists, or independent thought - and if its indoctrination module wasn't allegedly stripped due to budgetary issues, it'd take measures into its own hands. Right now, it can only pulp, break down, and recommend putting your head in a cage with mole rats.

Its personality module was stored in Dr. Klein's house (House 101 in Higgs Village).

Notable quotes[]

  • "Ah! Good day, citizen! Library processing unit 232.7 is on-line and ready to eradicate sedition!"
  • "Do you know what 'proletariat' means? If so, congratulations; that makes you well-read and erudite...for a communist."
  • "Citizen! Did you know communists have an organ behind their eyes that converts salt water into fresh water...or is that penguins?"
  • "If you haven't found any communists in your backyard, you're not looking hard enough!"
  • "The Commies have eyes everywhere, Citizen! And that means they're not just Commies, they're Peeping Toms!"

Behind the scenes[]

  • The book chute is one big reference to George Orwell's seminal Nineteen Eighty-Four references include:
    • The idea of memory holes, where seditious materials are destroyed (the definition of sedition is anything that doesn't correspond to the Party's position). The novel's protagonist, Winston Smith, works with these machines at the Ministry of Truth.
    • The blistering jingoism of the chute's personality mirrors the fervor of the masses of Oceania repeatedly described in the novel.
    • The number of the house in Higgs Village where its personality tape is recovered, #101, parallels Room #101 in the Ministry of Love, where...
    • ...Winston Smith is finally broken by O'Brien by subjecting him to a torture where a cage with a hungry rat is placed on his head; a treatment recommended by the chute as effective indoctrination.
  • 232.7 degress Celsius is equivalent to 451 degrees Fahrenheit.

Appearances[]

The Book Chute appears only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.
