The Vault news[]

New admin: Veryblackraven[]

Our admin team has grown yet again: Veryblackraven has applied for adminship and the community has granted the request. Congratulations!

MyHome enabled again[]

After Special:MyHome was disabled entirely a month ago based on a community decision, it has now been partially re-enabled. While direct links to Special:MyHome are still redirected back to the main page (to counter the forced redirect from http://fallout.wikia.com to MyHome), it is now possible to access MyHome by adding ?redirect=no to the end of the URL, i.e. by using links like http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Special:MyHome?redirect=no. The links to MyHome in the site skin have been changed to reflect this change.

This means the feature is no longer disabled for those who actually want to use it, while still addressing the community concern regarding the forced redirect.

Editor spotlight: MikaelGrizzly[]

In the next few issues of the weekly digest we are going to feature some of our major contributors in recognition for their efforts to make The Vault the best Fallout resource available.

MikaelGrizzly is one of our most long-standing editors and administrators, well known for being exceptionally polite and diplomatic (:-P). He is one of the major contributors to our Fallout and Fallout 2 articles, only occasionally straying into Fallout 3 and Fallout Tactics articles, and also provides a lot of screenshots for these games.

The Good Old Games character overhaul competition saw him scoring a landslide victory, and he has been initiator and project leader for the MSG Wikification Drive, the first project to be completed at The Vault.

Other sites where you may run into MikaelGrizzly are the Command & Conquer Wiki (where he is a bureaucrat) and No Mutants Allowed (where he is an administrator).

New name for the weekly digest[]

We're currently considering renaming the weekly digest, seeing as it is not actually a weekly feature recently. Although a few editors already suggested new names, please feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments.

Wikia news[]

Rich text editor upgrade[]

The rich text editor has received an upgrade and The Vault is one of four established wikis where it can already be used (newly created wikis will already have it enabled as well). There are no revolutionary changes in how the editor is used but the upgrade promises to address the main issues with the previous incarnation:

  • Faster loading of the edit window.
  • Images and videos now use built-in browser drag and drop functionality which is much more reliable.
  • Reworked article parsing which results in fewer spacing and formatting changes in underlying wikitext.

Be sure to post any bugs you come across in the forum thread so they can be fixed quickly. As before, the RTE is enabled by default for all anonymous users while registered users can choose their editor via Special:Preferences.

New MyHome feature: WikiStickies[]

A new feature called "WikiStickies" has been added to MyHome. The feature adds a new area in sticky note design and is intended to point contributors toward pages that need their help. The first version shows three kinds of pages:

  • Articles that don't have any pictures
  • Brand new articles, which often need to be expanded
  • Article titles that are linked to, but don't exist yet

Currently the list of stickies is generated automatically but it is supposed to be become customizable by admins in future updates.

Fall 2009 update[]

Wikia has released a "Fall 2009 Update" staff blog which summarizes Wikia's performance in the past months. It includes a short summary of major new features which were introduced as well as a list of improvements which are currently in development.

What is the weekly digest?[]

The weekly digest is a weekly summary of The Vault's internal news with the purpose to help editors keep up with what's going on at the wiki. It is the place to mention all the small things and improvements which do not justify an own news item and will be posted weekly on the main page. If you think that something should be added to the next digest, please list it here.
