Beds are a necessary component of creating a successful settlement in Fallout 4.
Overview[]
In order to accommodate settlers, each settlement needs to have a number of beds that is equal or greater than the number of current inhabitants; too few beds will cause happiness to drop. Beds should be placed in a sheltered location, i.e. with a floor beneath and with a roof over one's head.
Note that human companions count towards the bed requirements, both those assigned to the settlement as well as those traveling with the player when the player visits. Assigned companions will increase the settlement population counter by one, but those traveling with the player will not. For this reason, it is good to have one additional bed than the number of settlers to avoid a happiness hit when visiting.
As with beds in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, sleeping in an owned or rented bed will grant a 10% bonus to all experience earned via the Well Rested perk.
Survival difficulty[]
On Survival difficulty, different kinds of beds only allow one to sleep for a certain amount of time: sleeping bags can be slept in for one hour, mattresses can be slept in for five hours, and a proper bed can be slept in without limit. Additionally, sleeping bags do not provide the Well Rested bonus.[1] This has no bearing on settlers, but are an important part of the Sole Survivor's survival when they stop in town. Beds in settlements are also much cleaner and safer than beds found in the wasteland, conferring no chance of contracting a disease.
