Bears are animals from before the Great War.

Background[]

While it is unknown if large populations of unmutated bears still exist in the wasteland, several mutated species have come to roam the wastes following the war. Bears typically inhabited forested areas of North America, but occasionally transitioned into grassy plain, alpine and tundra regions.[1]

Characteristics[]

Depending on species, bears stand between six and eight feet tall and weigh several hundred pounds. Despite their large size, they are capable of traveling at impressive speeds. Coupled with their great strength, bears are able hunters. They have an omnivorous diet, ranging from large game and fish to berries and roots. They are naturally territorial creatures and often compete with other bears for their territory. Their territory serves as hunting grounds and contains their den for shelter and winter hibernation.

Variants[]

Mono-headed bear[]

Gameplay article:
none (mentioned in Fallout 2)

Although mutated bears are common in the wasteland, a bear with only one head is present on the official seal of the New California Republic.

Two-headed California grizzly bear[]

Gameplay articles:
none (mentioned in Fallout 2, Fallout: New Vegas)

The two-headed bear is presented exclusively on the flag of the New California Republic, which is aped from the state flag of California. Given that the state flag depicts a California grizzly bear, which went extinct in the 1920s with only sporadic sightings in the following decade. It is unlikely such a bear actually exists and is merely a metaphor to the other mutated life forms of the wasteland upon which the NCR was founded, especially the brahmin.

Yao guai[]

Yao guai
Gameplay articles:

Yao guai are the most common descendant of black bears[2] in the wasteland. Common in the Capital Wasteland, Commonwealth, and Zion Canyon, these mutated bears are vicious predators that attack nearly anything on sight.

Kept in the Nursery Repository in Colorado, these grizzly bears remain largely unmutated.

Bears, or the Capital Wasteland's equivalent, anyway.
You're not going to find one of these babies balancing on a big rubber ball, though, I can tell you that much. They're are vicious as they come -- razor sharp claws, razor sharp teeth. Nasty, nasty temperament."
  2. Of all species of bear that live in North America (black, brown, grizzly and polar), black bears are the only bears with populations in both Maryland and Utah.
